W
ith the exception of Cenozoic volcanic rocks that occur in the Awapa Plateau, Wayne County is entirely Mesozoic sedimentary rock.

Location: Caineville Area
Rock:

Fossils: petrified wood
Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Agate and chert are found along U-24 about 9 miles southwest of Caineville and also 6 miles east of Caineville. Jasper and petrified wood are also found in these areas.

Location: Factory Butte

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Drive west from Caineville for 0.5 mile to a junction with the road to Cathedral Valley. Take this road up Caineville Wash 0.3 mile to a junction and stay to the right. At 2.2 miles is another junction with a jeep trail to the right. 4WD vehicles can take the jeep trail 7 miles to an inactive uranium mine. Park at the mine and walk west for 0.5 mile to the head of the canyon and look for agate.

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From the Fremont River bridge 2 miles west of Caineville, drive east on Utah highway 12 for 0.5 mile and park. Walk 300 feet north toward a hill. The oyster shells are weathering out of the rock.

Location: South of Notom

Land Status: BLM
Directions: Drive 0.6 mile east from the east boundary of Capitol Reef National Park and turn south on the road to Notom. Folow this road for 3.8 miles to a junction and turn left for 2.6 miles to a minor junction with an unimproved dirt road leading to the east. Follow the unimproved road for 0.4 mil at which time agate can be seen along side the road.

Location: Jet Basin

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: When approaching Hanksville from the east, turn left(south) at the first road after passing the Texaco station. Continue south staying to the right at the junction on the south side of Hanksville and continue 2 miles to another junction (signed "Dugout Bench, Birch Creek"). Turn right and continue 4.2 miles to another junction. turn left and continue for 5.3 miles. Park close to the lower end of the knoll on the right side of the road. Find a trail down into the basin and walk about 0.5 miles to begin looking for jet. The jet occurs below a 6 inch coal bed.

Location: Sand Creek

Land Status: National Forest
Directions: From the General Store in Torrey, drive west for 0.6 mile to the Sand Creek road. Follow this road north for 0.8 mile to a fork. Take the left fork, cross a cattle guard and proceed for 0.6 mile to three water tanks on the left. 0.2 mile beyond the tanks the road forks again. go right and proceed for 0.7 mile to another fork. There is a sign to Hells Hole on the left fork. Take this fork for 0.2 mile to where a dirt road goes right take this for 0.2 miles and park near the big red mountain. Search the red clay at the foot of the cliffs.

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From the highway department shed at the west end of Hanksville, drive 10.3 miles west. From here a gravel road goes right and a dirt road goes left. Take the dirt road left for 0.2 miles and park.

Location: The Badlands
Rock:

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From Hanksville, drive west on highway 24 for 3.8 miles. An unmarked dirt road goes north. This road climbs a small hill and through a gate. Park by the gate.
