If I Could Have One More Hour

by Julia L. Nielsen, 24 February 2001

If I could have one more hour,
I would sing you a lullaby.
I would rock you gently in my arms,
And watch the time at nigh.

I would have those extra minutes,
to write those feelings down,
To capture the moments we had together,
To focus on just your breathing sounds.

If I could have one more hour,
I would watch the sun descend
Take in the brisk, cool nights
Close my eyes and pretend.

I would count my many blessings,
and pray to my Lord above,
I would thank him for the beauty in life
And the capacity to love.

If I could have one more hour,
I would tend to a garden filled with flowers,
I would tend to it and nurture the soil
I would cultivate, plow and toil.

I would sit back with my family,
Forget about the chores of the day.
I would gather them together,
And hug them tight and say,

"You are my precious angels,
I love you endlessly.
I promise to do my best
I will take care of you faithfully."

If I could have one more hour,
It would not make much difference at all,
I will still do all these things
For it's up to me; I have the power,

To make the most of the hours I have,
I will plan them carefully,
I will make room for everyone,
But first, I will make room for me!
