Precious Moments

by Julia L. Nielsen

I lay awake, taking in your presence
Your sweet, tender face lying next to mine.
Your tiny hands clasped together,
holding tight to one another,
Unaware of the time.

I touch your creamy, newborn skin
soft and smooth, white and unkissed by the sun.
Little wisps of silky hair stand erect,
Black and perfect, just like daddy's.
My darling one.

I see the fluttering your eyes chose to make,
What are you dreaming of, precious angel?
Do you know the sun rises and sets with you?
Do you know you are loved unconditionally,
eternally? It's true.

I pick you up and hold you to my chest,
smooth your fine hair, caresses your fair skin.
Your breathing is slow, rhythmic like mine
I sing you a lullaby, of verse and rhyme.

I rock you gently, my arms securely round you,
I wonder how long this night will go on,
This moment with you, frozen in time.
I know you will grow, the time will be gone.

I realize with some sadness, you are the last
My heart aches a touch, knowing you will grow fast.
I pray you will remember the times we had,
The stolen moments of love, I will long for so bad.

I lay you down gently, not wanting my eyes to close,
I want this image of you and I, locked away tight.
I will continue to bask in your spirit and light.
When sleep comes,  I will dream a sweet dream for two,
and hold you close, for I love you.
