The young woman was watching her nervously. Greer picked up the
knife, idly turning it over in her hands. Fortunately, for the
moment it was sheathed. No sense in having her pass out before the
deed could be done.
Megabyte stood nearby. He'd told her about the young woman's
doubts, about the need to see with her own eyes before she
believed.
"Ami, I know this is hard to take," she said finally. "But I'm for
real."
The young woman replied in her soft accent. "I know. But it takes
a while to absorb."
Greer shrugged. "I just don't want you to panic. And of all people,
the Tomorrow People should know about what you are sharing your
world with. Especially if our Game finishes within your lifetime
and you folks have to suddenly deal with the winner. Besides, I
want to hang around and I don't want you to panic if I do something
weird."
Ami twisted around to look at Megabyte. Greer guessed that
something in the way of a telepathic conversation was passing
between them. "Ahem, folks? Are you forgetting someone?"
"Sorry," Megabyte said. "You really need to show her."
"Show me what?" Ami asked, confused.
Greer unsheathed the knife. The two young people gazed at her
expectantly. "Now, Ami, I want you to stay still, no matter what
happens. I'll be fine."
Ami nodded nervously. Greer proceeded carefully, not used to having
to demonstrate certain aspects of her Immortality. She positioned
the knife over her arm and watched as Ami's eyes widened. Then,
gathering up her courage, and closing her eyes, she plunged the
knife deep into her arm, and then withdrew it, trying to ignore the
intense pain. She opened her eyes quickly to a vastly bleeding arm
and Megabyte holding Ami down on the chair, preventing her from
helping Greer.
As the three stared, sparks formed on her arm, playing around the
wound. As they ceased, Greer no longer had a wound or any pain.
"Wow," Megabyte said softly, and Greer realized that he had never
seen her heal before, either. Come to think of it, none of the
Tomorrow People ever had.
"I didn't intend to cut quite that deep," she said apologetically
to Ami.
The young woman didn't reply, apparently quite stunned by what
she'd just seen. She hesitantly reached for Greer's arm, and ended
up touching the bloody, but unwounded, area. "Does it hurt?"
"Not now," Greer replied. "Do you understand what just
happened?"
Ami nodded. "But give me some time, okay?"
"I will," Greer said, wiping her arm off on a towel, and then
offering one to Ami.
The young woman accepted it gratefully, and then stood up. "I think
I'd better go, now."
Greer nodded. "Take all the time you want. I'm always here to
talk."
"Thank you," Ami said.
As Megabyte stood to join Ami, she caught his arm. "Next time,
remind me not to do that again," she whispered. He nodded, and then
teleported out with Ami. Greer sighed, smiled, and went off to find
a place to really clean her arm.
End.
