Section 8: Treachery!

Describe their trip to Truane's Star as uneventful. They spent the majority of their time treating their wounds and making sure that Tredd's makeshift repairs don't fall apart in flight. After the Void jump, Wilson orders a PC with the appropriate skills to contact (using the secret encryption, of course) the CDC Communications ship. When the response is heard, it orders them to maintain radio silence and to rendezvous with the communications ship. A character passing an INT check will find the voice on the radio to be a bit odd. The communications ship has been captured by the Truane Navy, and its communications officer has a gun to his head and is reading a message to lure Discovery into a trap. The plan is for Truane Marines to board Discovery as soon as it pulls alongside the communications ship under the guise of customs inspection. The Agency has told the Navy that Discovery's crew are drug smugglers.

As Discovery comes to a halt, a large launch approaches. The assault scouts TNS (Truane Navy Ship) Pale and TNS Glory are clearly visible just a few hundred meters away, laser batteries trained on Discovery. If anyone tries to use the radio, they will find that a white noise broadcaster is jamming their signal.

Wilson orders Tredd to stay on the bridge, and whispers something inaudible to him. A Vrusk PC with Comprehension, or anyone with empathetic understanding or similar skills will, with a successful check, find that Wilson has just ordered Tredd to be prepared for quick, deliberate action. They cannot tell what he specifically ordered him to do. Wilson has, in fact, ordered him to stay on the bridge and be ready to purge the astrogation computer's records on his command. He then orders the rest of the crew to follow him to the cargo hold, saying, "I don't like this, fellas. Be ready for anything." The PC's notice him strapping on his sidearm. He orders the PC's to wait in their cabins, with their communicators on and their weapons ready. When the Truane Marines board Discovery, they will do so through the airlock in the cargo hold (pick a wall - use the bottom level of the Knight Hawks AS map).

Eight Marines pour through the airlock and, as soon as they are all in the hold, immediately open fire on Discovery's crew with their stunners! Wilson immediately orders Tredd to purge the computer. All NPC's except Tredd should be in the hold. Roll for initiative normally, and roll the combat normally for the NPC's in the hold. The crew will try to dive back into the lift and go up, which they can do in one turn. It takes the elevator one turn to go from one floor to the next. Characters can climb through the shaft to the next floor in three turns. There is enough room in the shaft for the elevator to pass a climbing character without harming him.

It is intended that this be an Opening-scene-from-Star-Wars type of gunbattle for control of Discovery. Remember that everything is currently weightless! The Marines will first try to stun the crew, but will resort to deadly force if the battle goes against them. If you have to doctor some die rolls, try not to let Wilson get killed.

All Marines have the following equipment: Spacesuit with armor, albedo screens, electrostunners, laser KE-1000's, stunsticks, power backpacks, magnetic boots (which will work inside Discovery), anti-shock implants, and private-channel communicators. Their spacesuits are armed with helmet rafflurs. They all have Beam Weapons 4, Melee Weapons 2, Weightless Combat (if such a skill is in use), Martial Arts 2. Here are their stats:

2 Humans: STA 55 RS 55 IM 6 PS 5
2 Vrusk: STA 50 RS 60 IM 6 PS 5
2 Yazirians: STA 45 RS 60 IM 6 PS 5
2 Dralasites: STA 60 RS 50 IM 5 PS 6

If the Marines are defeated, then the Pale and the Glory will open fire with their laser batteries trying to knock out Discovery's drives. Another wave of 8 Marines will arrive in 10 hours. Discovery doesn't have a chance.

If the PC's are captured alive without being stunned, they will be given a staydose injection.
