RED KNIGHT

a STAR FRONTIERS Novel

by Layne K. Saltern

Chapter 30

The floor vibrated with greater and greater energy.

"Kro'khan! Are you all right? What happened in here?" It was Voar.

"You fool," I moaned, only half conscious. "Why didn't you leave like I told you?"

The floor shook with the thunder of a distant explosion. A second followed from the other direction. The ceiling cracked, powdering us with loose plaster.

Voar had to holler to be heard. "We did leave! I sent Katrina in a skimmer with Zap's body! They should be in the next valley by now! But I saw you didn't come out, so I came looking for you!"

"We'll both die now," I said with a voice abandonned to fate. "The base's reactors will blow. . .any second."

A few control panels burst and shot fireworks from the wall.

"You saved my life once!" said Voar. His powerful pseudopods wrapped about me. "Now let me save yours!"

I don't remember what happened next.
