The result of this trickery is a formula that draws fractals ; that are basically distortions of perturbed Mandelbrot sets. In ; fact, some functions actually do draw perfect M-sets as well as ; the familiar perturbed sets. ; ; In today's image I used the 'trunc' function, which is a ; function I very rarely use. Like the 'floor' 'ceil' and 'round' ; functions, it rounds off the calculation and therefore breaks ; the image into large discrete chunks. I usually find the ; fractals created by these functions too chopped up to be of much ; interest, but today's parent fractal is intact enough to be ; considered a single entity, which makes it worth further ; investigation. ; ; The parent fractal of today's scene consists of a single large ; Mandelbrot set surrounded by smaller sets. Some of these ; smaller sets are pretty much intact, others are cut off. ; Today's scene lies in the northern branch of the Seahorse Valley ; of a midget that sits some distance west of the large M-set. ; Only the west half of the midget is there; the east part has ; vanished into limbo. The name "Truncated Minibrot" refers to ; the larger cut-off midget in whose Seahorse Valley today's scene ; lies. ; ; Perhaps because I was surprised at how well the 'trunc' function ; worked, I rated today's image at a 6. The render time of just ; under 17 minutes results in an overall worth of 35. By download- ; ing the finished GIF image from the FOTD web site at: ; ; ; ; time can be saved and the overall worth can be forgotten. ; ; A sunny but chilly Sunday here at Fractal Central, with a ; temperature of 50F 10C, was just fair enough to let the cats ; enjoy over an hour in the yard. Their evening moods reflected ; the improved conditions, making an extra treat unnecessary. ; Today is again starting chilly, but it is expected to turn ; warmer by afternoon. It looks like another acceptable day for ; the duo. ; ; As for me, the moderate amount of work before me will be behind ; me by noon. Then it's on to the fractals. Very possibly I'll ; find something of real interest. Until next time, take care, ; and know that every fractal takes you closer to infinity. ; ; ; Jim Muth ; jamth@mindspring.com ; jimmuth@aol.com ; ; ; START PARAMETER FILE======================================= Truncated_Minibrot { ; time=0:16:56.73--SF5 on a P200 reset=2004 type=manfn+zsqrd function=trunc passes=1 center-mag=-2.061222634101924/+0.03859064620506061\ /3.444947e+012/1/55/0.0 params=0/0 float=y inside=0 maxiter=6000 bailout=100 logmap=1213 periodicity=10 mathtolerance=/1 colors=000FXFFTFFQFFOFFJFFFFG7FI3FG3FF3F9DF4OM0XTI\ O`YFgm6rjAuiDvfPxdPycUzdPyfNxg9vg6vi6jj6`l6Pl6Fz0O\ z0X0o43dA6XFAOJDDOI4SL0XVmfcjYjgQrdIzaAz_1zX0v0zf4\ gSGPDS60c00d00d00f00f30g70gA0gD0lC0oA0sA1v96z79z79\ z67z67z63M00L00J00L06M0CM3DJ0FG0GD0IA0J70L40M10Q40\ T70YA4`CAcFGgILjLQmMVfLT_JSSJQLIQDGP6GO0FM0FM0Qzz0\ zo0vc1oS9gIF`MFSzGvzDumSiSd_6rP9MjC0zG0xL0pP6iTAaY\ GVaLOfQGjV9_c6Oj3Cr00y04p67gDA_LDQTGI`J9gMIaPPYSXT\ VcPYjL`rGcyCCY91T0JL1`DCr4Mz0Xz0Vs0Tl0Sg0_d0da0jY0\ rV0xS0zT0rV9fXIXYSL_`9_i0gr6oyCxzJzzPzyGvj9rX0mI0d\ G1YGAQGJJGSCG`DFQFDIFD9FADF9GF7LF6OF3QF1VF0YF0`TIX\ g`TvsPzzMjDlfLccQV`XMXcFTi6Qo0Ou0Vr0ao0gm0oj0ui0ia\ 4YXGMQSALaLPmVSydVziYzm`uramvdgzg`ziTzlMzmGzuPuzYl\ zfczoTv0Xv0Yv6`vCavIcvOfvTgx_izdmzYrzSuzMjz_`zlQzy\ IzzSzm`zPiz0Qz07z0Dz0Jz3Pz9VzG`zMVzQPzTLzXFz`9zc4z\ fJzlYzrlzxzzzzzzzzzzzrzzi } ; END PARAMETER FILE========================================= ; ;
