Find a Soldier in the British Army 1760-1913



  1. Go the Public Record Office PROCAT search page, which is http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/
  2. Click on "search the catalogue" link to the left
  3. Type in the ancestor name into field #1
  4. Type in "W0 97" (WO as in War Office)
  5. Click on the Search button


And you will get results like this example below, which show the name of the soldier, where he was born, which regiment he served with and his age at the time of discharge. Years of service and/or the range of years served may also be listed.

WO 97/35/119 JOHN CROPPER Born SALFORD, Lancashire Served in 8th Dragoons; 10th Dragoons Discharged aged 43 1812-1840
