We admit it.  We have lofty ambitions.  Planned Parenthood Action Council is aiming high after the success we enjoyed in the 2008 elections and the 2009 legislative session.

We strategically targeted Utah legislative races and won 55% of the races in which we endorsed a candidate.  We canvassed Utah in support of endorsed candidates making over 3,300 phone calls and knocking on over 4,100 doors.  This important work led to an expansion of pro-choice elected officials in the state legislature, and it would not have been possible without PPAC and our incredible volunteers.

We worked throughout the interim legislative session and passed landmark legislation to expand STD services and Emergency Contraception for rape victims.  Because of our efforts in the 2008 elections, we ran Expedited Partner Therapy legislation that passed with a strong majority vote and bipartisan support (71-2 in the House and 22-0 in the Senate).  We also ran Emergency Contraception for Sexual Assault Victims legislation that passed unanimously through both the House and the Senate, something that has never been done in the country.  Each of these bills was sponsored by Republican Senators and in both instances our wins are evidence of our judicious cultivation and outreach to conservative legislators who we engage year round with informal one on one meetings.

But our work is not done.  We need a permanent allied majority, and since PPAC is the only political organization in Utah specifically focused on the issue of choice and protecting reproductive rights, the responsibility of achieving our dreams falls upon our own shoulders.  We are fighting tooth and nail to make sure that grants and other funds vital to reproductive health are not cut.  We have introduced comprehensive sex education legislation so that our young children can grow up healthy and prepared for their future.  Utahns across the state are counting on us and hoping that our ambitions win out over our challenges.
