Rocky/MM19, 8.5?, ?
When it hit +20 at Provo Muni and Cedar Fort I couldn’t resist. I drove all the way from Rocky to MM19 and didn’t see any white caps. I just didn't get there early enough. Went back to the Rocky beach. Probably could have sailed an 8.5 and the big Carve but they hadn’t made it back in the van since the last Sulphur small-gear blowout. The good news is the water has covered the mud flats already and is back to the rocks at the bottom of the ramp. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a great ski season and a full Utah Lake.,

Snowkiting has started off with a bang this year. Snow coverage was better than I expected at Fairview with 3-4 feet with 3-6" of fresh powder. Wind was light near the road. However, on the hill the wind was good. Brian & Heather were there demoing Ozone kites. Jon showed up and took pity on me and loaned me his 12M Frenzy - thanks Jon! Jake was there as well. Jake and Brian were getting some good airs on the hillside despite the light wind. It looks like we are in store for another great season.,

SHORT NOTICE....Sorry for such short notice on this but I just got it in my email. It's a clean-up for what we know as Lindon Beach.
The John Mora Beach Preserve
Our organization seeks to create a beach park and preserve on the shores of Utah Lake. This weekend we will initiate our commitment to this cause with a beach cleanup effort. We recently learned that Utah Kiteboarders is participating in Governor Olene Walker’s Adopt-a-Waterbody program and have adopted Utah Lake. We feel that your organization must share some of the same sentiment towards preserving and improving the scenic and recreational opportunities offered by this water body. We cordially invite you and your family to join us and learn about our mission.
The John Mora Beach Preserve
Your new home for family fun and learning on the shores of Utah Lake
A premier tourist and local destination for beach recreation
Preservation of a vital natural habitat for local wildlife and plants
A unique opportunity to learn about the history, geography and ecology of an important Utah landmark
A legacy for generations to come
Situated on the east side of Utah’s largest freshwater lake, The John Mora Beach Preserve (JMBP) will extend one mile along the shoreline of beautiful Utah Lake. The JMBP will effectively preserve open space while maintaining recreational opportunities. As Utah Valley grows and develops, establishment of the JMBP will serve a vital role in the community as a natural sanctuary for its inhabitants.
On Saturday October 23, 2004 the JMBP committee will host Beach Clean-Up Day. We invite you and your family to join us in cleaning up the beach area, to learn more about the JMBP vision and have fun taking part in a great community project! This is your chance to meet and greet committee members to find out what we are all about. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up to receive more information about the progress of the project and how you can help at more events like this. We’ll provide snacks, lunch and gloves. You’ll help make the beach beautiful again by picking up small garbage. Come share in making the JMBP vision a reality!
Directions to the beach are attached to this email in a PDF file.
Please forward this invitation to anyone you feel would be interested in this cause.

OK folks... I don't know about you... But I am DONE with these INVADERS of OUR website... I am going to get something done on this in the next few weeks. I don't know exactly how... But, I have been doing some research and it's time to PREVAIL... Some of this spam, spyware, etc. has really infected the site and it is going to discourage people from visiting here. So it's time to do something about it. It may cost us some money... Possibly $500 or so bucks, BUT it will be worth it... So, don't give up on the website... Very soon it will be back ALIVE with out infection... Time to visit the clinic! The Yahoo message board is working fine... and I kind of like that it sends emails (can be turned off), but I don't like that you have to ALLOW COOKIES... I don't like COOKIES... Phew... Ok, I am done ranting... If you want to see this site back to it's old self say Aye!,

Bountiful Lake, 7.5, 105L Vivace
Went to Bountiful lake on Sunday, which is next to the dump. It is sailable, although it has to be cranking. Its about a 12 second reach fully juiced, then jibe-o-rama time. If the islands weren't there it would be really good. I would say about 3 sailors could go at once then it would just be a zoo. Deparate times call for desparate measures. Its high speed flat water, think ripples. Also its only 15 minutes away. Good place to teach someone. The water is clean, lots of people fish there, and the sign only says no motorized boats so your good.,

DC Sailboat beach, 7.2, Cook Hot Dogs, 9.2, X-Ray
Arrived at 1:15 to what I thought would be an epic day. Lake fully whitecapped, steady, definately a 6.4 day. By 1:30 looked like some holes and rigged a 7.2. Went out and got two rides, then it quit. Came in, rigged my barbeque and cooked some hot dogs. About an hour later decided to rig my 9.2 and at least go out and float around. Wind came up here and there and got a few more gusty rides. But nice to get wet one last time????,

DC and Utah Lake, 6.5 and 5.4, 91 ltrs
Well I have to say that my timeing was really off this weekend. Sat at DC arrived at island beach to full on white caps, couldn't decide between 5.4 and 6.5 which I rigged as a started seeing some holes. By the time I hit the water they were big holes. Got some rides and did some schlogging too. Too much trouble to rerig.
Sun. Utah Lake State park. Happy to see Jim there, and lot's of wind. Pulled out 5.0 and small board after watching a few minutes. Then I started seeing some holes and got the med board, and then the 5.4. Same as the day before, got a few rides and then it died. the web showed that it had been blowing since 11:30 so I guess that I just missed the good wind. I was still happy to get out and get a few planners. the good news is that the water depth is pretty good there. I think I could still ride my big gear there with out too much trouble. Just a short way out and it was over my head, and the bottom seems pretty soft.
Now it's time to get out the thermal underwear, or head south.....SR,

Sulphur, 5.3 , Sonic 85L, HiTech 8'2"
I figured it was one of those days to get there early. There were already great whitecaps at 11:30. Unrolled the 5.7 and got beat up on the beach. Measured the wind at the end of the dock and it was as steady a 21 mph as I have seen. Hit the water on the 5.3 and it was perfect SW with great waves. But like they predicted, it swung more west and then it got holier, gustier, and absolutely snarled the water. Still, looking at the end of the season, it was a great gift sailing Sulphur this late in the season. The water was a little chilly but Vern and I were fine with wetsuits in sunny, 60 degree weather. Not as big a crowd as usual but the 7 of us that gave it a shot were all smiles. Tom was the macho man of the day hanging on to the 5.9 in such strong winds. 3:30 to 4:00 it switched back SW giving some great waves again for a great final sesh.,

Jeff and I arrived about 12:30, hit the water at about 1:00 wind was 18-25. Not as gusty as usual,
wind stayed up for about an hour then slightly backed off and slowly declined until about 3:00 when it really backed off. Doug and Jason arrived just as it was starting to off. Could have rerigged a 17 or 19 but had to go. Great Day, Warm air and OK water temps. A good sized group of windsurfers out at the Island Beach launch. Two Boats and no jet skiers.,

I arrived at about 1:00 and Vern and Ken were allready out on 5.5 and 5.3 . I rigged 5.9 and was pretty overpowered so I came in to rig down but it settled down a bit and I flattened the 5.9 abit and went back out.Much better but some of the gusts were huge.Good day. Worked in the A.M.,sailed in the afternoon, and then took my son to the football game and watched the Utes have their way with North Carolina. Sounds like one more windy day at sulphur before it turns into an ice cube. So I'll probably see you their.Unless there is somewhere warmer with water. Anyone been to Yuba lately, and if so,is there any water in it?,

Unable to sail this weekend, I thought I better give Sulfur a shot... Immediately rigged at 1:00, and started puttering around... enjoyed a nice afternoon, wind gradually got better and better and from 4-6:00 planning almost 100% of the time. A big sail but what the heck, being powered up is good! A very nice time! Dry suit was too much at times, just right later in the day. ,

I’m afraid this has touched a “sore spot” The comments “we should” and “we need to” etc. What we need is to organize so we don’t lose access to all Utah Lake,,,,, But wait,,, we already have an organization; unfortunately very few kiters feel the need to join. If “we” go to the rangers, or whoever, at BYU beach and tell them “we” (4-8) of us use this spot, they will ban it because it’s easier than dealing with it. If more kiters join and we can tell them there is an organization of a hundred or more, we will have the clout to get things done, just like the windsurfers have had to do in the past with access issues. UWA was responsible for getting the law about life jackets for windsurfers changed, access to Rocky Point, etc. Things get done when there are numbers of people in an organization.
The apathy from the kiters makes me think it was a wrong choice to change the name from Utah Windsurfers Assn. To Utah Windriders Assn. Maybe the name should be changed back and let each kiter individually fight for there own personal spot, one on one with the officials. If we lose BYU beach, why wouldn’t we lose ULSSB and every other spot on Utah Lake? Then every State Park etc. Mark and Dean, in the previous post --http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/utahwa/message/75 --have ideas, but we all need to be organized to get this issue resolved. Numbers is the only way. I’m sure that in the future, there will be more issues involving kite access in Utah. I’m as guilty as most about apathy, I don’t post anymore because most places I kite, I don’t want more kite there. More kites, more issues. Disclaimer: Not intended to offend any one person, just open thoughts to the kite community in general.
P.S. Why don't more windsurfers join the Yahoo message board??? It's very easy (apathy there also??)

ULSSB, 20 m^2, 150 cm
Got the beach around 5:15 with about 10-12mph winds. That was enough with the 20 m^2 kite and the big board but fortunately the wind stepped up a notch around 6:00 so I came in a grabbed the smaller board. Was well power the rest of the evening. 6 kiters if I counted right, Apri, Ryan, Matt, Doug, Marty and myself. We pushed into darkness as hard as we could and reluctantly came in at 7:45. Good wind, warm air, cool but not cold water, beautiful sunset, great company, and an awesome sport. The way I see it another perfect evening in paradise!,

The wind started light around 5 PM and slowly built. I went downwind the first 30 minutes. After that I was able to go upwind. The wind was very steady out of the NW. At sunset the wind shifted a little more to the west and picked up a notch. I was fully wound at that point. If there had been more daylight available, I would have rigged down to my 19.5. 7 - 8 kiters were out enjoying the good wind and still relatively warm water. ,

10.12 Tuesday,
Dad's Beach, Hypersonic 105,
Warm air and moderate water temps still let me sail with a shortie again. It was warmer than Sunday, (when I could have used a full suit but did okay with the shortie). In any case it was nice smooth wind, long reaches, and the sunset was spectacular. I figured the temps would drop significantly when the sun went below the horizon so I promised myself I'd come in when the tip of Timpanogos lost its beautiful red/gold color. I did just that and still had enough ambient light to see my gear while derigging but it didn't really get as cold as it might have. All in all it was pleasantly deluxe. Not super wound up but non stop planing while tweaking for extra juice the whole time. I'd ride Formula if the lake had water in it but the micro fin on the HyperSonic is a real asset. Amazing how big a sail you can ride with a 34. Did I mention the sunset? ,

10-12 (Tues),
ULSSB, 20 m^2, 150 cm
Arrived around 5:30 to a nice breeze (5 MPH) and a nice warm sun. Hung out just enjoying the beach and staying hopeful. Within about 10 minutes the wind had a hint of picking up. By 10 till 6 the wind was "on" and we were good to go. Ryan pulled up around that time. I was well power to overpowered on my 20 m^2 kite so I would guess the wind settled in at around 15 MPH. With a full suit and booties the water was pretty comfortable my hands were not cold at all. Got a full hour and half of classic SSB before it just got too dark. I looked for Jared and Erik up at BYU beach but never saw them. Sounds like Jared was out, I bet he saw Ryan since Ryan was way up wind a one point.,

Oct 9th and 10th,
Sand Hollow, 9.0 & 5.4, F147 & 91 ltr
It was so much fun! Sat did not kick up the wind it was supposed to, but Fred, Lana, Linda, and myself had a great time riding in the warm, light south winds on our big gear. Even with light winds, most of the boats left the water, and we had the lake to ourselves. After that we found some good Mexican food in Hurrican, and completed a really fun day.
Then Sunday, we were planning a bike ride, and noticed that it looked kindof windy. So we decide to take a look at the lake first. Wow... full on white caps across the lake, so we paid our $5.00 and found plenty of beach space...we had the place to ourselves. Linda and I rigged mid 5's and medium boards, Fred 6.5 and Lana 5.0. For north wind, it was still quite warm, and for the next 3 hrs was steady as could be. I would say we planned 95% of the time. The middle of the lake even got some fun 2.5 ft. swell that was fun to play in. Linda and I had some great drag races across the lake. We all had huge smiles on our faces, even though we were pretty tired after sailing that long. More good food in St. George and we sent Fred and Lana on their way, back to SLC.
Monday moring it still looked breezy. We decided to take a look at the lake again. Not as windy as the day before but some white caps. So we went in to the beach and rigged 6.5's and the wind died. After about an hour we decided to derig and go for a bike ride to explore the other side of the lake. We got back about 2:30 and the wind was starting to come back up, as a storm approached. But we still needed to get the trailer ready to go and out of the RV park so we had to go.
What a fun weekend,it's a great little lake and really nice place to sail....,

We got some great rides. However, the 20-30MPH forecast in Heber never really panned out... It stayed around 15-22MPH with absolutely perfect temperature. Water was actually pretty nice. My next investment is a 6.0M sail. Need that gap closed a little. Great sailing session though on the 5.2... 10 or so sailors out on 5.2-7.5m. I sure miss ya Craig... There are, of course, links on that page to others. New maps. Much improved.
Also, note that the one that is at Saratoga Springs, near Rocky Point, that never worked, Now Works. Each site shows graphs of the info now, too, unfortunately not for wind speed.
Guess we all need to change our bookmarks again, but glad to do it for the improvements.,

9 October 2004,
Sulphur Creek Reservoir, 6.2m, 9'6"
Not a bad day at Sulphur. About 8 or 10 sailors out for a beautiful, partly cloudy day. There were sailors on sails from 9.6m to smaller than mine and all got to get a few passes. The conditions were variable, but not too gusty. I would have gotten in considerably more sailing, but as I headed out for the first time, I realized that I needed to move my harness lines back an inch or two, so I headed back after only about 50 yards. When I reached shore a few moments later, I discovered I had a hole about 10" across in my sail. Have no idea how it got there, but it definitly need repair, so I had to de-rig the sail and dry it, then slap a couple of pieces of patch material on it, then re-rig. Finally made it out as the winds lightened, but got into the staps a few times and got in a few good practice tacks. Still enjoyed my day; especially since, as I arrived, I discovered one of my mast bases laying on the ground in the cow pasture. Hadn't even realized that I had lost it. Must have left it on top of my trailer as I drove off about two or three weeks ago and it rolled off as I drove away. Guess there haven't been too many sailors up there lately. Water temp still not too bad for full wetsuit and most of the weeds are gone. In fact, I didn't notice any at all.,

This was the first wind for 3 weeks so at least we got wet, but I'm still itchin for some more fall ride before it gets real cold.

Bear Lake, South Eden Beach, None, None
No one missed any sailing at this lake this weekend. Debating between trying to eek out a sail day at Sulphur or making a payback to the wife for all the weekends I have disappeared sailing. Based on the weather reports Sat. morning, headed for Bear Lake without the sailing gear, only the sea kayak and the bike. Had the campground to ourselves in some drop-dead gorgeous fall weather. Lots of great beach walks, and there is lots of beach, and paddling the kayak on the most gorgeous water I have been on. The only sailable winds were between sundown and dark Saturday night during a near-miss rain storm. We sailed the Hobie Cat here once long ago. I would like to come back and sail Bear lake on a high wind day.,

Salt Ponds, 21.5M Psycho II Kite, 148 JL
Noticed a north breeze in SLC late this afternoon. I decided to check the salt ponds out of curiosity and the reading was 20 gusting to 24 out of the north. I arrived to steady 13-15 mph wind. Rode fully powered for an hour. The water level has dropped increasing the salinity dramatically. The bottom of the pond is now covered with a 1" crust of salt. I took a couple small shots in the eye which was painful and blinding. Fortunately, I never put my head under. The shallow water combined with the high salinity made for smooth, glassy water. Very nice scenary with the Oquirrh's on one side and the Stansbury Mtns on the other.,

DC Sailboat Beach, 9.0, F147
It was a good day at Sailboat Beach. I was a bit worried when we arrived to north breezes. But it quickly switched to South, and was strong enough to get some good rides up to the dam, and be able to play up there for a while. It was a perfect day for the formula board, to get crusing. Although the 9 was not big enough to keep up with Carl C, who kept planning, when eveyone else left the water.
I think we had about 9 sailors on the water, it was nice to get out, in warm, sunny weather. It was frustrating to have the bathroom facilities already locked up, when we pay the fees that we do.,

Sailboat Beach, 7.7, Hypersonic
A fun day at the Dam, Layne/Cindi,Trevor/Troy and Gabriel, visiting/renting the START from Seattle. Such a cruise location, rig on grass, start the bar b cue, wind is obvious. Trevor blew everyone away, did a dash for the Dam, never came off a plane for 2hrs. Someone has to emulate Carl C., I was hoping he'd wait 5 yrs. Make sure you rag on the Rangers for NOT opening the bathrooms. $9 a day/$75 yearly fees and people using the area to shut the doors is a farce. Wind didn't make it to Island Beach, Sunday looks like a repeat. There was a Gunnars sighting. ,

Wow what a nice surprise to get 2 5.0 days over the weekend. Sulpher had some wild strong wind, that left me and a couple of others swimming, when it shut down. Fortunately it came back after about 25 minutes and I made it to shore. I think everyone got in a couple of good hours of sailing.
Utah lake was alot of fun too, it was nice to be in some good swell and good wind. I hope we get more like this before the real cold sets in.,

Sulfer, Boat Harbor, 4.7, 96L Starboard
Got dealt a pair of kings if windsurfing is comparable to blackjack. Saterday was killer at Sulfer, downwind of the launch the swell was nice and clean and the inside glass just tastey for gybing, I even managed to pop some nice airs which generally is tough at sulfer due to lack of swell. Sunday at the boat harbor was insane. The water looked like boiling concrete. Being overpowered and launching off 2-3 foot breaking swell port side was incredible, it was huck fest. Nice hangtime with considerable distance, in addition you got the semi wave return pass to set up more port side huckin. Nice 2 hr session sunday evening with about 6 others. Nothin better than catching big air on small gear because you feel like a feather. See you next time...Geoff Lewis,

Sulphur Creek, 5.1m, 100 Liter - 12 in
A great day for the 4.5m - 5.5m range. I sailed a 5.1m almost all afternoon; a little over-powered at times and a little under-powered about the same. Nice air temperature all afternoon and the water temp isn't particularly cold for a full wetsuit. Even saw a shortie or two on the water. Guess that'll change soon. I'm writing this on Monday and I believe it is snowing up there today. Anyway; lots of sailors got in a lot of good passes on Saturday.,

Deer Creek (skunked), Provo Boat Harbor, 5.4,
Got to Deer Creek about 1:45pm to heavy rain and no wind. Saw a few sailors packing up and decided to head to the Provo Boat Harbor -- never sailed there before. Rigged a 5.4 on my small board (about 100L), walked out 20 ft. from the point in mid thigh deep water in my shortie and proceeded to get spanked for two hours. I don't know if it was the gusty wind or this being my first time on a short board but I had a hard time staying up. After about two hours things started to click and I sailed more than I was in the water. Quit around 6pm, exhausted and beat-up but with a BIG smile on my face. :-D,

After an afternoon drive from DC ( Skunk ) I went to south Bay across from Mile Marker 19, got blown off the bay ( nothing smaller than a 4.2) Packed it in and went to SSB to more managable conditions. Sailed extremely powered on the 6.0 for the first hour, Could not resist the short board temptation so I rigged down to the 5.5 and sailed another 1 1/2 hrs. Nice ramps for hopping, jibe practice and fast reaches. Awesome side off shore conditions, only one Kite out, surprising.,

Sulpher, Sulpher, Provo Boat Harbor, 5.2, 4.7,4.7,
You know there were a lot of sailors out there on Sat & sunday & no one posted. It went like this . . Friday. Sailed great wind at Sulpher Creek. Rigged the 5.2 and was plenty powered in the gusts, slogged just like everyone else did in the lulls (even though they were all on 5.7-7.5 - I was surprised some were holding on). Saturday there was a huge contingent from Utah. Everyone getting rides with a wind that was more south than I've ever sailed there. I rigged the 4.7 and was happily planing the majority of the time until late afternoon. Sunday was interesting. Though the wind meters were reading some serious wind all morning at the Provo Airport . . by the time I got to the Provo Boat Harbor there was no wind. A handful of us waited till about 3:00 when Gunnars decided to leave. Almost 5 minutes after he left it started picking up. He figured it out, came back & we all got great rides till the arms gave out. I was out on the 4.7, most were out on 5.0 It was a little bit up and down but plenty windy & there were never really any holes. I planed about 98% of the time on the 4.7 and 85 liter board. Considering the depth of the water (in a couple places I could barely touch the bottom) there was some pretty decent swell down there. Definately a good place to sail from. Great way to end the weekend. ,

Showed up stiff from riding four hours Fri. Got to the beach around 2pm. Wind was all over the place, 5min at 30+ then a few min of 10mph then gust back to 30 with a consistant average of around 20. Just at 2:30 or so we had a major squall come through and blow to upper 30s low 40s solid for around 10 mins and you could hardley see anything because of all the dust/dirt in the air. I rode until I was tired at around 5:30 at which time the wind really stayed nice at around 15 but I was too wasted to ride. I always hate leaving the beach early, so I called a friend whos been wanting to try out the kite and we body dragged until 6:30 or so. Left the beach with perfect wind and clear air and skies. Crazy weather day. Overpowered to underpowered. Jared went out with me and rode a 12m for about 5mins until he got a 5 foot loft out of the water with the kite in Nuteral. ,

Arrived at Jordanelle after the optimism didn't quite pan out at Deer Creek. The pattern just couldn't clear the instability above Timp. At Jordanelle we arrived to some sailors just coming in on 4.7's and 5's. There were patterns of wind coming across from the dam. Rigged a 6.5 and had some overpowered but definately powered rides. Carl rigged his 9.0 with the hypersonic and was powered up full time. Overall a good day. Its funny how the wind in the mountains certainly does not reflect the pattern in the valley. ,

Rode south of the Provo harbor, The Y beach. There is easy access to the beach if you go through the marina to the southwest end of the harbor. I checked out the road down by the airport a week ago and it looked a bit hairy. Definitely needed a lift on your vehicle to get back up over the rocks to the main road. You get basically the same beach going through the marina. I had to do some downwinders tonight because of the lack of a bigger kite. Nice side-onshore wind, 15 Mph or there about. I couldn't see anyone else on the water, no boats or even kiters down at SSB. ,

Like Lane said, this is just like the Gorge. Got there at 11 and rigged the 5.7 but ended up starting on the 6.9 at 11:30. I haven’t seen this sweet of 6.9 session since Utah Lake in the Spring. With it filled in, I sidelined the big Carve, the king of the Sulphur schlog, and had the first good session on the Ride in a while. Then by 12:30 it was on to the small gear with some of the strongest windlines of the day. I kept thinking about rigging down, as many were going to mid 4’s, but I was loving the screaming reaches on the Sonic Race and the fully flattened 5.7. The Sonic is spectacular. I had been real ambivalent on the ’97 5.7 until, sitting on the sand beach at Well’s Island in July, I finally took a stick and learned how to rig it properly, downhauling way past normal. I finally tried the 5.3 and Gorge board at 4:30 when the arms gave out, but I only got a few good rides before I had to schlog in. Left in tornado like weather with a huge smile on my face. One of those days when I was totally pumped. Probably 5 hours on the water and the body felt better than after 3 hours ripping and schlogging Friday. Probably the best Sulphur day since John Freed and I caught it in the same conditions May 4.,

Itch...SCRATCHED!I started my day out in Grants bathtub. I got there just at sunrise to no wind, but it soon arrived. I rigged big and ripped for a solid hour plus. The reach to the east was right into the sun, so it was tough to see if a 'fishin' boat was in line to get T-boned or not. I guess I should take a pair of sunglasses next time. Rippin reaches, jibe practice, and all before 9:30am. Then it began to be gusty and holey, so I packed it in and headed for the car show at Peach Days. What a great start to the day and a great way to celebrate the freedom I enjoy! I am truly grateful to those who have sacrificed much to protect our freedom. God (continue to) bless America!,

Arrived a little late at 2:40. It sounds like the good winds were form 1:00 to around 2:00. I hit the water at around 3:00. The wind was probably around 8mph with the gusts coming through at about 15mph. Got a couple of good rides on the gusts. I beleive it was Carl out on a formula board and a big sail ( I'm guessing around 11sq/m), he was plaining a lot more than I was and came blasting by me a couple of times. Tom Smart was there but wasn't sailing after 3:00. I also saw Kenji parked on the beach. He didn't have any gear rigged, and he said he was heading for San Fransisco tomorrow. There were also a couple of newbies that looked like they were having some fun. Not a bad afternoon lots of boats and jetskis though. It will be nice when they think it is to cold to come out to the lake!,

Had a pretty good day, but had a hard time deciding, should I rig big for the light wind and hang on in the gusts, or should I rig smaller and ride the gusts. Well I opted for the smaller gear and schlogged quite a bit and worked a to stay up wind, but I sure had a fun time gettin in the straps and crusin along. I got a couple of hours in and it seemed to scratch the itch.
The water has cooled a lot, and makes you know that fall is in the air. The water level seems to still be good. So I think there's still some sailing to enjoy.,

Belmont Shores, CA, 19.5 & 30M Kites, 135 North Dragon
Arrived to steady 13 - 15 mph wind. Unfortunately, when I opened my bag I found my helmet crushed and my board shattered. Guess the folks at Jetblue decided to run over my bag with their baggage cart. Luckily, there is a windsurf shop in Long Beach with a decent selection of kiteboards. I quickly bought one and went back to the beach. The wind was light, so I rigged my 30M. I soon discovered why it isn't much fun to ride a 30M at Long Beach. The wind is so steady there that people regularly stand on the beach for a half hour with the kite sitting perfectly over their head. It is our gusty wind that makes jumping a large kite fun. The next day was better with 15 - 18 mph wind. I rigged a 19.5 and had a fantastic time with plenty of power. There were over 100 kites in the air, but the beach is so long that there was plenty of room for everyone. All in all, it was some good sailing.,

Sparkling day, no clouds, looked cold at 11;30 but the water is much warmer than expected. No boats, no chop except for Ken Onstott ripping on his 6.9. Troy Jorgenson got his skunk factor off his back,George rode a 6.0, Jeff McBride, super Rookie had only a big smile, had NO wetsuit nor harness on the START and lasted 2hrs, could have been the Buffalo Burger Fuel. I managed to bust another mast on my first run, resorted to rescue/tow/idiot mode. Up n down wind but it was still blowing at 5pm. Might be the call for Monday. Ken can qualify, I thought it was probably 13-20k, felt light. ,

Rocky Point, 5.9,
I'm really fealing my arms today after thursday afternoon and yesterday. Great day of stong steady winds. Rigged the 5.9 again and it was perfect. I went out at about 2:15 and sailed with no schlogging involved, and when I came in it was 4:30.Took a short break and went back out for another 1.5 hrs. lots of fun chasing Eric and Ken around. Still strong and steady for the 2nd session. Eric and I even sailed all the way to the other side of the lake. It's a long way over there. If you went over there and it died, you'd be hailing a cab back.Anyone up for one more Gorge trip?I'm watching the weather up there, and when my wife gets back from Vermont next weekend and it looks like wind up there for a few days,I can go back up for some fall sailing. So if you can get away in the next couple of weeks, give me a call and maybe we can get together. cell- 891-2008.

the water looked like oveltine... the storm to the west made it pretty gusty so some of the jumps were a little scary, but fun. stay out just about as long as possible with out getting struck by lightning. felt a few gust that were in the 40 mph range the little kite took them well

Utah Lake, Rocky Point, 6.9, 5.7, C135, Sonic 85L
Got there at 12:30 having seen +20mph readings all morning, but it was down to 12, oh well. Tom and I knew the weather groups were saying it would come back and it did. By 1:00 I was the wind dummy planning around on the 6.9. By being out in the middle of the lake I knew when it ratcheted up a notch and 40 minutes later we were rigging the small gear. With it averaging +20 at times the 5.7 was a handful but hiking across the mud flat to rig down seemed too daunting. Definitely some high speed shredding on the little 85L race board. With almost no scoop or rocker, the lack of waves was a plus for speed. Even the 6.9 session was a blast. I love Sulphur but, after sailing there 6 times in a row, it was great to be on Utah Lake where you can pull up on a plane and go ripping for 5 minutes if you want to, even if it is on a sea of mud. No rip and schlog this day. The wind was the familiar clouds-in-the-hole effect. You could see all the clouds in the gap and we were under bright sunshine and relative warmth (63 degrees). It was warm enough I never realized I hadn’t zipped up my wetsuit. The cold in SLC must have faked everyone out as only 4 of us showed up for some great wind. Two great sessions in two days. My high wind sailing tank is full again even without a trip to the Gorge. For those of you concerned about the depth, I was able to use a 40cm fin with the 6.9 without any problems, except I felt like I needed to walk a little further out before taking off. But I don’t think I would feel comfortable with the 51cm I use with the 8.5. Coming to shore has the same thrill as a demolition derby, you just don’t know how far to push it. If you are lucky you feel the fin slicing through the mud and jump off. If not, you nip a rock which gets you to bail off real fast.,

Showed up around 3:00 and the wind had backed down from the earlier readings of 23mph. By the time the kites where rigged the wind was puffing as high as 27 and averaging around 20. Wind died back down to 13 for around 20 min, but then picked back up to 25sih. Stayed at 23-25ish until a hige dark wall obscured the north part of the lake. I decided to come in, and just as we pulled away from the beach my wind meter had a max gust of 48mph! I'm glad that all the kiters where smart and safe enough to see it coming and get off the water. Was a good day, Kenny boosted some of the biggest airs I have seen on Utah lake too, so it was fun to watch! ,

Provo Boat Harbor, North Jetty, 5.2~3.0, 78L
Arrived at around 4:30 w/Josh... The wind had really calmed way down and was about to rig 7.2... But saw the wall coming from the northwest. Looked like one of those that you really have to be rigged and ready to catch the best of it. So I put the half rigged 7.2 away and rigged a FLAT 5.2... Then it hit and sailed for the next two hours in a very strong wind. Josh and I had to hold the sails down during the 50 mph or greater gust... Clearly you can see where it peaked on the day's wind graph. The "smoke" on the water was amazing. Could've had a 4.2 rigged for about a half hour and a 2.8 rigged for about 10 minutes! The 5.2 was great though the rest of the time. Big ol' chocolaty swell. Saw where "BYU beach" is. The kites were flying just south of the harbor during some of the 30MPH winds. Luckily not during the 50 mph gust.,

2nd consecutive thursday of ripper winds on Utah lake. Parked and rigged on the boat ramp(the marina is closed). HIt the water(mud) at 3:30...walked out 100 yards from shore to get in knee deep water. A little schlogging for 20 minutes then perfectly powered to a bit over on the 4.7 for 2 hours. Did some long reaches, 2 miles out the water was chest deep. I got off the board and stood there for a while, a couple miles off shore. I could see sails upwind, blasting along. It was surreal standing in the middle of the lake enjoying the view and serenity. A lull at 5:45 brought me in and I prepared to rig the 12 m kite but the wind came back, clouds moved in so I showered and left. Yes the Showers are still on which is a huge bonus after grovelling in the muck. ,

Sulphur/Rocky Point, 6.9, 5.7, 5.3, C135, Sonic 85L, HiTech 75L
First read Tom’s message on the gate. It is hard to believe the same people that love to sail Rocky Point would jeopardize that privilege by continuing to leave the gate open. It may already be too late but please, keep the gate locked. As for sailing, after 2 months on the big gear I was getting desperate enough to contemplate heading to the Gorge with Ivan and Jerry for some small board sailing. Now no need. An epic day. Should have waited for Utah Lake but the weatherman said the front would hit Salt Lake between 2:00 and 5:00. I was too impatient and headed for Sulphur. Started on the 6.9 but could already feel the windlines were 5.7. As soon as it filled in a little, I switched to the little Sonic race board and had a blast on the 5.7. It was nice and sunny and I would have kept on sailing but it abruptly died after a couple of hours. I had planned on leaving for Utah Lake about 2:00 anyway so off I went. Got to Rocky at 5:30 to a dying wind and most everyone packing. I told them to wait, that the weatherman said it would start building big starting at 6:00, but no one believed me (I don’t think I did either). But, for once, NOAA was right. Between 6:00 and 7:30 it built from full on 5.7 to 3.7. I had a spectacular session on the little Sonic and the 5.7 and then a wild and wooly 5.3 session on the Gorge board. With the water so shallow there were hardly any waves so the Sonic Race was screaming. Clouds moved in and covered the sun, a huge benefit as I have quit early before due to flash bulb eyes. A short rain ran me off the water at 7:30 and I didn’t have enough energy to rig a smaller sail and drag it back to the water afterwards. The walk to and from the water at RP is taxing. I don’t recommend sailing Sulphur before Utah Lake, as going from sailing on drinking water to a sea of mud takes a toll on the spirit. Left with the healights on. Rigged 4 boards (1 twice), 3 sails (1 twice), and drove 4 hours and still thought it was a spectacular day.,

I'm really glad I waited around till noon to decide. I was going to go to Sulphur, but the front had passed S.L.C.allready so I went to R.P. instead. 7 guys out and good utah lake wind. The only bummer was a nephew of the owner came in and railed me for the gate being left open. Again . He said he found it left open last thursday from sailers also. He said he was going to get his unkle to stop letting us in.He was very upset and I tried to smooth him over but when some migrant workers thought they could come in and fish, he pretty much lost it. So don't leave it unlocked for a minute. It looks good for this afternoon again. I should be there by 1 or sooner. It's 18 allready down there. A small walk to the navel deep water' but no problem. See you there and lock the gate. Tom,

Arrived around 5 PM at BYU Beach to 20 -25 mph wind. Erik and Jared were already there rigging 8's. Travis was out on a 10. I rigged up my 11 and went out for about 30 minutes and the wind started to die. The wind was only blowing 12 - 15, so I decided to rig my monster 21M foil. As soon as I was on the water, the wind began to build. I kept getting bigger, floaty jumps until it got to the point that I couldn't hang on anymore. Went out on the 11 again and the wind started to crank into the upper 20's with gusts into the low 30's. My big foil on the beach became dislodged, but fortunately Erik was there to grab it. Started getting massive, scary airs. However, the sky started to look dangerous with distant lightening strikes. I decided to pack it in and so did everyone else around 7:45. While we were packing up our kites the wind picked up to 40. It was truly epic.,

Wind 10-high 20s, 9-2-2004, Come
The wind will be at Utah lake and should be strong Tommorrow (9/2/2004) I'm guessing that the wind will pick up around noon and will continue to build until dark with the highest wind just before dark. Think it could get up to around the upper 20s. I'll be at BYU beach, and should be there by 2pm (Hopefully). I am going to try to fill in the major ruts in the road leading down from the airport wall tommorrow. When I first drove down it 2 months ago, I had no problem getting down or up. With the increased traffic it has gotten worse. A few big rocks in the right places with some fill dirt and sand should work nicely. See you out there

Thanks Sarah for putting the campout together again... The dinner was great. Girlfriend and I made the beautiful drive through the uintas (w/out my gear) and were able to make it up to the dutch oven dinner at Sulphur. It was tasty as usual with tender BBQ ribs, chicken, pork n' beans, corn on the cob, potatoes, and peach cobbler w/vanilla ice cream. It looked like the group was having some fun up there. Although the wind didn't cooperate like it had in the past couple years, they appeared to have had some rides. Had a drawing with some great equipment, shirts, and hats given away. How was sundee? ,

Spring,
MM 19? or Rocky Point? or Sulphur?, Gaastra 8.5,
Hey guys,
I need some help. I just realized yesterday that the last time I sailed my Gaastra 8.5 (which was a while back) I must have left the tip extension on the beach. I think the last time I sailed it was at Mile Marker 19 in the spring, but I could be wrong it's been so long ago.
The extension is a tapered, hollow, fiberglass rod about 3 feet long and 5/8" on the large end, with a slot for a webbed strap to go through, attached to the tip. It's an integral part of the rig, so I can't sail that sail until I get it back or replace it.
I sure would like to get it back. If you've found it, please contact me at the included email or by phone at:

Acting like fall up at DC with smoother wind than we have seen over the dog days of summer. Not often it's still enough at 4 in the afternoon to justify my 105 liter board but there it was, there I was, and that's what happened. Sailed non stop partial to full on from the time I touched the water until I left for dinner. Jim S cracked a mast and had to endure the pain of being dragged sea anchor style from the kinda far away when you are broken down other side by a considerate cat sailor. Me, I'm looking at tomorrow and possibly 2 more months of nice clean mountain water at DC with occasional diversion excursions to Sulphur, Jordanelle and Utah Lake as needed. BTW, there are leaves a changin' and hints of fall color. Bring it.,

Rocky Point, 5.1m, 9'6"
Great afternoon at Rocky Point. Nice temperature and nice winds. My 5.1 was just right 90% of the time 2:00 - 6:00. The usual smooth Utah Lake north winds and, for once, pretty smooth water. The wind direction was changing direction slightly once in a while, so maybe that is what kept the swell down; or maybe it is that the water depth is only belly-button deep all over the lake. It's like a great big Rush Lake. Now if the south winds were effective there, too, we would be in great shape.
About 7 or 8 sailors having fun on the water and one or two kiters that launched north of us that had a pickup that looked it was stuck pretty good on a small spit of land on the beach. Must have driven across the golf course to the beach. Live and learn! At least he was thinking when he left home; they had a jet ski to retrieve them when they went down wind.,

Update from Lindon Beach. Still quite sailable, but it is a long walk from the road. Not a long walk in the water before sailing, but it is quite muddy and even a long ways out is still only just above my waist. Brad and I arrived as two kiters were leaving. The wind had dropped a bit so we were set to kite, but there were still big gusts. Brad took about 4 runs before he was too powered. I did the long walk back to my car to get my windsurfing gear. Finally I got some fast runs. I think I will be back at SSB or BYU beach in the future.,

SSB, 16m^2, 150cm
Got the beach around 3:00 with only one kiter on the water. I was measuring lower 20's so I rigged the 13m^2. Rode for about 1.5 hours then the wind came down a notch so I came back in and rigged the 16m^2 X2. The wind held till the sun went down. At the most there were about 7 kites on the water. Overall a very nice 5 hours session.,

BYU Beach, 11M Yarga, 148 Jimmy Lewis
Arrived to 20 - 25 mph wind with Doug already out on the water on a 9.3 North. Marty rigged a 10 and Jared had some good reaches on an 8. The wind stayed on all afternoon and started to lighten around 5 when Matt showed up. Two brothers were there learning how to get up on the board. Small swell made for good riding. The wind is side on-shore at BYU Beach. It is a clean launch site, the only difficulty is the drop-off on the trail from the dirt road to the beach. It is easy to go down the trail, but it is tough getting back up. I put my F150 in 4 wheel low and I still had to take a couple stabs at it. It would probably be a lot easier in a smaller 4x4. However, I would not even attempt it if you don't have 4 wheel drive.,

Showed up at about 10:30 to a light breeze. I waited till around 11:00 and it started to pick up. Flew the 1120 for a hour or so in gusty wind. It stoped blowing for an hour or 2 then the clouds moved in. The best wind of the day was under some dark clouds. I waited for a break in the clouds untill about 4:30 the wind was good and I flew the 840 for a bit then had to go. It looked like it might have cleared up even better after I left but the wind seem to be slowing as it cleared.,

I promised Layne I would give a full report this evening! Happy to do it... Heading up the canyon at around noon the shadows of the clouds were racing my truck. At one point going 75MPH the cloud's shadow was keeping up with me. I have never seen that. Arrived at Sulphur around 1PM to WWWHHHITECAPS! It looked perfect... Vern, Marty, Peter, Tom were there Getting gear ready. Vern wind dummied with his... You ready 3.7M... And planed right away with minor lulls... I rigged 4.2M 78L board and headed straight down to the narrow reach where the swell is smoother and where that warm thermal water comes out of the ground... J/K No thermal warm water... Be nice though huh!? It is nicer swell down there but you pay the price if it dies and you have to shlogg up wind. Wasn't too bad today. First sesh was SWEET and around 2hours!!! Then the wind backed off a little and I sailed back and rigged 5.2 threw on 115L... But then it picked way up again... But I was already down to the narrow reach again with Marty, Dave, and Vern. We had some awesome rides today. Dave was making some loops and barrel rolls look pretty fun... The day was definitely epic. Wished more could've been there. The wierd thing is that for about 2-3 hours a big dark cloud just seemed stationary to the west about 10 miles and never moved over us.,

Doubek and I drove to Yuba in hopes of some friendly south wind for our kiting pleasure. Was blowing West or WSW in Springville on our way through. Arrived to a wicked 15-35 mph. Kiting not in the cards. As a consolation we took turns pole surfing on the rig I brought. Plenty of water still. Got stuck in the mud on the way out but broke free eventually. Stopped at SSSB on the way back and went out on the 12m but the wind eventually died. Was still coming from the West or WSW. Launched from the far southern shore facing to the North. Was perfect side shore. I wonder if it blew like this all day there? Was very steady, anyway. Maybe tomorrow. ,

to awnser about the conditions at byu beach as it is now being called. it is very similar to the west beach just around the point from ssb... it does however have a few +'s that ssb does not have. sw wind is side onshore, nw is side side shore. the break water just north of the beach provides flat water inside the marina and just to leeward of the marina on a nw wind. sw is flat near shore, chop starts couple hundred meters off shore...
beach is sandy, at least 4 to 5 miles long i have driven at least 2 miles of it it is very clean since getting to the beach keeps the high school bonfires away( only locals walking dogs make it down.. however since kiting there our kites have pull alot of attention to the beach..
down side .. the beach looks to be covered in the spring with water levels, it was visible in late june early july..
hope this helps,

Notice to all intimidated by the reputation, The Gorge can have premium steady wind. First day 15-32, gusty, scary. But the middle three days were 22-28 from 9 AM until 3 PM. After 3 it got a bit gusty. Apparently, under premium conditions, that's how it works. The Sand Bar launch is super user friendly. I am a complete wind and launch snob and I thought The Gorge rocked. Oahu, Hawaii - Kiting
I went for about 1-1/2 weeks for vacation and rode about 6 days (could have rode every day, but i had to do some surfing, diving and tourist stuff). The winds were light for the first few days (16m riding)on the North East in Kailua , then it improved to 12 m riding on the North Shore at Mokulea. The wind in Mokulea is from thermals, and usually kicks up around 11am and last until sunset. The last couple of days saw some huge surf 12' to 15'+ waves (front side), at Mokulea. This is when you find out just how shallow it is to the reef. It was great riding though. About 15 - 20 kiters, only a few brave windsurfers. There were a bunch of the pro's filming there, so I tried to get in as much film time as possible. Watch out for the giant turtles in this area, I had to oly them frequently. It was a great time. ,

BYU BEACH, Is BYU beach "BYU approved"?, If it is, here is the important stuff
Brigham Young University desires an environment for its single students windsurfing on and off campus that is conducive to their moral and spiritual growth as well as their jibing performance. Because the university relies on the community to provide accommodations for most of its sailors, BYU has established windsurfing guidelines and policies to cultivate such an environment for single students desiring to sail off campus. BYU windsurfing personnel attempt to rectify any deviations from these standards and policies.,

Message Board, Erik->YUBA answer,
Erik, Yuba does have a great reach as of two weeks ago. But the lake is only 10% full now but don't let that discourage you... The bottom is like a bathtub, so with only 10% full it is a long reach but the water is only about 10-15 feet deep. That's all any of us need. It did reach around 60% early in the spring but drained quickly. Oops... It is only 3% full now. But it still has a reach. Just not deep... Here is the website that tracks Yuba's volume: http://sevierriver.org/lower/dcd_index.php3?vs=low1# PS. I may find time to sail tomorrow... Great wind forecast in a lot of areas 20-30MPH WSW... Maybe Yuba if it's not blowing in Provo. Anybody seen how far the walk at MM19 is?,

8-24 (Monday),
SSB, 13m, 150cm
Pulled up around 6:30. Wind was reading lower 20's. I couldn't believe no one was out (Willy? Marty? Doug? Arpi?)! Pulled the 13m^2 from the bottom of the gear pile (since I haven't ridden it all summer). The wind for the first hour fluctuated a bit with about half the time just right on the 13 and a quarter of the time overpowered and a quarter underpowered. My guess is the wind was 14-28mph, but I wouldn't call it gusty since the wind was cycling up and down over long periods of time. As a result it was 5 reaches underpowered then 5 reaches just right then 5 reaches overpowered.
Ryan arrived at about 7:30 and rigged a 16m^2. We rode until about 8:45 when the sun was down and the dark clouds gobbled up the remaining sunlight. With the cooler air temperature, lack of sun, and water temperature (which must be 10 degrees colder than a week ago) I would say it was a bit chilly. I wore a shorty wetsuit and for the last hour thought my full suit (or a little sun) would feel nice. Fall is on the way, get it while you can!

I spoke with Derik this morning and I am amazed at his progress. Every time I talk to him he sounds more and more like his old self. He is also making leaps and bounds physically as well. He told me that he can walk several blocks now. Considering that he has only been out of the hospital for just over a month, this is outstanding news! Derik also has a very positive attitude. Please keep Derik in your thoughts and prayers as he continues to recover. He still has months of therapy in front of him and he needs our support more than ever. It will also be a while before he gets back to work, so if you have it in your means to send him some money, I am sure he would appreciate your help. Derik's address - 650 N. 100 W. Don't know what to call it..., X-2 20m & 12m, Lassen Custom 120
Don't know what to call the place we went since Dean doesn't like the name "Erik and Jared's Spot." I guess we could call it Provo Airport Rockwall, but that is just as uncreative and as long as Erik and Jared's spot. The beach is partly off the BYU property and the fact that BYU owns the 4 acres of land just south of the Provo River, and only BYU students have kited there thus far, I think I will now refer to Erik and Jared's spot as BYU beach. Fair enough? :') Anyways onto the sailing. Showed up at BYU beach at 5pm, wind was solid 13. Rigged the kite and had a cloud come over us and shut us down until 5:30. Rode the 20m until around 6:15 when the wind picked up to 20ish. Rigged the 12 and rode until 7:45. Air temp was a little chilly, but I still didn't wear a wetsuit. Wind was patchy, but never dropped below 15 after 6pm. Wind was still strong when I pulled away at 8:25. Max gust was 22mph, and average for the session was 14.9 mph. Not a bad day. Jared was out with me as well. ,

dc island, 1pm-4pm,
Troy gave me the heads up when I called when he said it was looking good. And indeed it was. Better than I would have thought. A lot of mid size sails saw daylight and water today. The wind was warm and held the thunderheads at bay over Heber and the Jordanelle until 4 or so when I bailed and packed up for home. I do know there was a healthy fleet afloat and that frequently outnumbered the motorized craft. Many of the sailors were familar but there was a good contingent of non-regulars (irregulars?) out to hook in and hold on. A couple of kites got pumped up on the beach at the cove but near disasters just getting them aloft made their owners think about catching up on the 8 man synchronized javelin catching prelims or something else equally pressing. All in all a good sunny day on the water and, as yet, no neoprene. ,

We saw caps at Jordanelle but continued on to D.C. since there were some semi-dark thunder clouds and D.C. skies looked better. D.C. was calm and it was lightly raining so we high tailed it back to Jordanelle and decided to take our chances. The skies looked a bit better when we got down to the beach and there were still white caps so we rigged up and got some rides. I hate to ride local storm winds but when there are no other options then you rig a floaty board and take your chances. The wind was shifty and mostly from the North East. Had some alternating screamin' reaches is several directions and then nothing. Broke a harness line in one of the puffs but tied it off and sailed a bit more. The flat water was kind of fun and reminded me of Coche Island in Venezuela. We had about 30-40 minutes before it backed off completely. ,

Dear Politically Corrupt...those of us that have been close to being run over by motorheads are just frustrated by the lack of education on the water. The previous poster realizes that motors deserve their day, they pay like sailors do. I've talked to the Deer Creek Ranger, the DCIR in order to understand the problem. No one wants 'an incident'. Rangers are severely understaffed, the DCIR DOES tell boaters to stay 150 feet away. Boaters save sailors when we break down (son Troy lost his rig at Sulphur last week) and sailors rescue downed jet skis (Layne Peterson any given weekend). The answer lies in the UWA seeing an opportunity to educate all parties, we are part of the solution. ,

Sulpher, hot air,
So it appears that wind powered sports people can be quite elitist in their lack of tolerance towards others who pick anther type of recreation! So what if you don't like their noise or whatever other aspect of their recreation you choose to decry! It is no reason for outlawing them and their enjoyment.(quite an 'onerous' attitude if you ask me) 'Motorheads' are not out to get rid of us and our enjoyment of the water and wind. Many of them leave when the wind picks up anyway. Live and let live or we may find ourselves on the receiving end of being not allowed to enjoy our sports. This might be in restricted access to a launch or wind blowing on the "off" day of an odd/even regulation, etc. ,

Launch Site Naming, *,
I think there are a few factors which will result in more and more launch sites around the state. Most notably the drought conditions which is resulting in new beaches forming, in particular for Utah Lake. I also think that the loss of Rush (which seems more and more permanent due to the drought or more importantly the draining (Kennecott?)) will have some looking for new locations to fill in the, sometime long, gaps in wind at Utah Lake. As we find new locations it would be nice to give them names which are either descriptive or cool (for lack of a better word). I am coming from California surfing and every decent break has a name. On the central coast we used to surf Hazards (for Hazards Canyon), Cables (supposedly there was a cable that was laid to Hawaii), or stoolers (someone took a dump?). In southern cal it was more likely a street name like “D” Street or Law Street or a pier like OB or PB pier.
For may sites in Utah, the lake or reservoir name does the trick just fine since many are not so large that there is likely not too many good launches. Some reservoirs like Deer Creek, which have multiple launches already have good names like Island Park and Sailboat Beach, but I think we are lacking on Utah Lake. We have South Sandy Beach which is a good, well recognized name but we need a name for the west launch beach and the beach that is south of the west launch (north facing). It might also be helpful to have a name for the west point of SSB so that we can say “yeah dude I dropped my kite west of the ????? and had then got dragged all the way to Lincoln Beach, it sucked. I also think we need a name for some spots over on South Bay. I also must admit that I don’t think “Eric and Jared’s spot” (used as a name) fits my requirement of “descriptive or cool” (just my opinion) but it seems like a good spot so it needs a name.
This is a creative bunch so maybe some suggestions could be posted and then tried. If a few of us start using them then the names just might stick.
The only other comment I have is that so many launches that are already named fall under the “descriptive” heading so it might be nice to work on some “cool” names. Some day when our kid’s kids are heading out for a nice session it will be cool when the say Grandpa (or Grandma) we are headed to Aldaras (Greek meaning winged gift), you want to come? Then we can say you know we named that spot back at the turn of the century when we were riding those funny looking kites that we controlled with string, can you imagine that?

Lots of good days. Flew almost every kite in my quiver. The windspeed depended a lot on location. Two wave spots seem to always have nuclear wind. A couple flat water spots have lighter wind. The wind was consistent. The water was warm and best of all clean. The waves were pretty good with head high a couple days. It was fun to watch the locals attempting kite loops. The carnage looked painful, kind of like attempting to barefoot waterski - lots of skipping and splats. Didn't try any kite loops on purpose, but with a 9M I managed a couple inadvertant ones. I am glad that I wore a helmet. The locals on Kauai are less friendly overall than in years past. There are more kiters than ever before and so there is less "aloha" and more get out of here "howli". Oh well, it is still an incredible place to kite.,

I arrived to a nice 12 to 16 mph wind. Arpi was rigging and a windsurfer was in the water slogging. Arpi and I sailed fully powered for about 20 minutes and then the wind dropped to about 8 to 10 mph. It stayed that way till the sun went down but then picked back up just as we were leaving.,

You can get to Erika and Jarida's spot by driving Provo Center Street to the dirt road (left, going south) that goes along the Provo river levee and then goes around Provo Municiple Airport just before you go into the state park. Just as the road makes a hard left to follow the airport runway, there is a steep trail that makes its down to the beach. If you don't have a 4x4 you can just park on the road and walk, or you can go into the state park and park on the south breakwater and launch from the beach just to the south of the break wall. I don't even know if you really need 4x4 you just need some fair clearance. I can make it in my stock Ford Explorer, so I would guess anyone in a pickup could make it down and up too. ,

Wind at Provo Muni read 14 around 4:45. I made it down to the lake around 5:30. Wind stayed around 14-15 until 7:15ish. Wind dropped down to around 9-10mph at 7:45 when I barley made it back in. I was packed up and ready to leave, and the wind picked back up to 14-15. I left at 8:30 with is still blowing a steady 14-15.,

Sulphur Creek, 7.2 Gastra 90's special, 115L
Saturday gave up some surprisingly great rides. The Team Dubock, Carl C & Sara, Ken and wife, Marty, and Doug and a couple other PC guys were sqeezing some great rides out. I was so surprised to see the wind graph on the first divide for saturday, you would think that we could've been on 4.5's. Check out saturday's archived wind graph. I rigged the 7.2 being that my 6.7 Northwave had a batton poke out and edge last week. There is a rekindiling relationship going on with me and the 7.2 that also surprised me. It is by far the lightest sail (color and weight) in my entire quiver, not kidding. It is mostly Dacron (or whatever that is), has one camber and cranked down, it felt awesome! I have sailed some Sail Works Retros and some newer big sails and I can't believe how this one compares. I was chuckling last week when I had to bust it out for water, as I have been using it for the land sail board. I guess North Sails are going back to the same material. Might be something to it! Anyway, WHERE TO SAIL TOMORROW?! Sulphur... Tuesday forecast looks nice! I think I will head up at around 10 after a few hours of work. Hope to sail with somebody up there.,

Just another gorgeous, sunny, windy weekend at Sulphur. Friday was the windiest with sails as small as 5.6, but all 3 days were great sailing. The water is warm enough that shorties are the call. The island is getting close to the surface, as there are lots of weeds by the buoy. The night sky was gorgeous. Too bad Salt Lake can’t adopt Tucson’s ordinance banning lighting that aims upwards, maybe we could see some stars in Salt Lake too. What a great way to spend some summer days.,

Thanks to Rick McClain for weeding the launch area. The island isn't showing yet. The C Store is prepping for the UWA campout, the cow field will be open for camping. well, that was nice. we hit the water around 3:30pm and stayed until 5:30 happily scratching the itch. the biggest chop was the team Dubock swell as they swarmed in formation across the lake. Ken O., Rick H. et al were there nurturing their relationships with the wind and the water. other than a couple of power boats and late show supersizers on wave runners it was all windpowered craft of the strap in and hold on variety. it is such a pleasure to sail without an overwhelming presence of motorized mayhem. apparently there was an awful collision at Pineview yesterday. let us hope that some day we will at least have some motor free days at DC for the sake of ourselves, the kiters, canoeists, kayakers, fishermen and other sailors. By the way, people without boats and wave runners greatly outnumber those with so democracy is on our side if the organization is not. meanwhile motorheads will outnumber us on the water just as smokers predominate at bars, not because there are more of them but because they are so onerous that in their presence everyone else leaves until they are the only ones who can stand themselves and they even bother themselves. maybe an alliance with the fishermen would help promote an odd and even day policy, or maybe their obnoxious behavior and fumes could be limited to the other 50% of the lake...hmmm. ,

Provo Muni read 13mph at 5:55, so I headed down. Jared Jaynes and Tyler Barton also rode, Jared on his 22m Wipika, and Tyler on his 16m Fuel. When I got there the wind on the beach read 14-15mph. Rode the whole evening powered up. At almost 7pm I could see that there were at least 4 kites down at SSb and I'm pretty sure that Dean and Ryan where two of the riders. Wind stayed solid even after dark, it dipped to 11-12 for about 20mins, but even when I left at 9pm, the wind meter still read 15. The max gust 19mph, Ave. 14

Sulphur, 7.4,
I got up there at 12:30 and sat around for a while hoping for more but rigged the 7.4. Ken went out first on his 6.9 It was very up and down untill 2:30 when it filled in quite nicely and sailed powered most of the time and over powered some of the time with hardly any schlogging untill 4. took a break and sailed another hour after that but not as steady as from 2:30 to 4. Eric showed up and got a couple of quick sessions in before it died. 5 guys out today. I forgot you can still have fun on big stuff. When's the campout?,

I showed up around 4:30 to around 13-14 mph. Dean was out on his 20m North and Willie was out on his 8.0 starboard. Jared Jaynes showed up the same time and rode a 16m Wipika. Wind at Provo Muni never rose above 8, but after Deans windlog report from yesterday, and todays forcast looking identical, I decided it was worth the drive. The wind today just as I launched my kite gusted to 33 and blew at 25 for around 5min and then died completely. 20 minuets later I told myself I would pack up and leave if at 6:30 nothing was happening. Just before 6:30 wind picked back up and blew for another half hour before shutting down again at 7ish. The wind when it was blowing was a solid 16-17, but then would die completely off, only to come back 20 min later. Everyone had fun and was thankful for the rides they did get. Sometimes in the summer here in Utah you just get so desperate that you'll try to ride anything!,

Checked the weather report at about 10 in the morning. It was already coming out of the sw. Called the weather talker at 10:30 and it was blowing 11. Arrived at the beach at 11:04 and rigged the 9.0. Sailed for about 30 minutes and had to come in and rig the 7.0. I switched between the 9 and 7 for about 45 minutes and I got overpowered on the 7.0. Came back in and rigged the 6.4 and then the wind backed off again. Sailed the 9.0 till about 3:00 when I had to leave. While I was packing up, the wind came up again and the sailors that where still there were getting some pretty good rides with sails in the 7.0-8.0 range. Team Dubock was there along with the Bradshaws, and a couple others. Fun day!,

Messege Board Post,
Lake Powell, mb,
I just got back from lake powell and a week of wakeboarding on a houseboat. As we were coming back through the main channel with the houseboat towing our Air Natique, a microburst came and created 7 foot swells in the channel where we were. For any of you that know wakeboard boats, they ride really low to the water and CANNOT handle these conditions. We couldn't turn around because the wind would blow the houseboat into the rocks if we did and because we couldn't turn around, our Natique capsized and flipped over with me and a buddy in it (we were bailing it out). Long story short(well not really) my kiteboarding gear was in the bow of the boat under the cover (20m kite, 11m kite, board, harness, bar, pump, etc). The reason im telling this is because i recovered everything but my bar and lines so i need to get a new one.
Before i had an 60cm ocean rodeo punchout with 27m lines and im looking for a similar setup (i like all the safety releases it had). Does anyone have any suggestions for a new bar or is anyone selling any bar or lines? ,

Gorge +Squamish B.C., 3.5-5.9,
Long time no see. What the hell is up with the message board? Anyway, this summer I've been to the Gorge 5 times and Squamish B.C. twice. You all Know about the Gorge and I had great luckthere. But the owners of Brighton also own Cypress Mt. just north of Vancouver B.C.and they have the Olympics in 2010 up there. Whistler has most of the skiing events but Cypress has the half pipe, mogal and airial jump and g.s.for boarders and boardercross will be a real event by then.Anyway they asked if I'd go up and dig the halfpipe out in the dirt and help install snowmaking up there. So I went up for 2 weeks after Memorial day and back up after the 4th of July for 3 weeks. So I got 4 trips through the Gorge paid for by the Co. Squamish is only an hour from Cypress Mt.and a great wind machine. If it's sunny out, the wind will blow every afternoon. Sailed 5.3{4.7 for most}a few times and had a blast.Great wind and when the tide is coming in it's like sailing easterlies, but when the tide goes out,it jacks up some nice swells.Great place to sail. The place is called the spit and is kite heaven as well. Anyway, 15to25 today I may sneak away and go to Sulphur. If interested call me 891-2008. and see you soon on the water I hope.Late Tom,

Showed up around 6pm. Wind was around 14-15. We had some holes, but wind was solid for about an hour and 15min. between 6:30 - 7:40sih. Rode in between the two jettys of the state park marina for a little while and it was hot! Never gone that fast in perfectly smooth water before. I really liked it. Wind completely tunred off by 7:45. Still a really good day with about an hour and half total riding time, but south is a little sketchy. I'll need to go with dean down to South bay on the next south that comes through.,

Willy and I got on the water about 5:40. The wind was measuring about 18 with a few holes and some gusts to the mid 20's (although overall not that gusty for a south wind). The first 30 minutes were overpowered for me and had Willy screaming across the lake. The next 30 minutes the wind dropped a notch and was just right for my 16 m^2. The last 30 minutes were light but still rideable (maybe 14 mph). Got off the water at 7:15 very satisfied. Willy rigged big and did one more very long reach out and back. He didn't get off the water until about 8:00. It's a big lake with lots of wind for only 2 guys. I think South Bay has a lot of potential for these south flow days but it is going to take some figuring out since we have so little information on what the wind history is and no real time information (like the good ol' days before the internet).,

Jordanelle, South flow, where to go.,
Nice windsurf spam, let's forward that to the Viagra/Explicit Farm Animal types and see how they like it. If the south flow isn't able to come down and attach at Deer Creek it can be good at Jordanelle. The fetch is more wide open there but if it's more a thermal push up the canyons then it probably favors DC. If you have time Evanston may be good but it's a bit further. Do us working stiffs a favor and post where ever you go.,

Ok... Even simpler... If you aren't aware... Most probably are... On each of the Mesowest graphic weather pages on the lower left there is a line saying "Data Courtesy of:" If a graph such as Grantsville is down, click on the data courtesy of entity or organization to find the phone number to call if they are down. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO CALL, THE BETTER CHANCE THAT THEY WILL FIX THE STATION DATA. Usually, the problem is with the data provider and not mesowest the data conveyer... I called the TOOELE EMERGENCY ETC. network. The main guy who would fix the Tooele weather stations is out of town! But she said nobody there knew they were down and she would try to get the second in line below him to fix it. If they didn't know, we obviously need help them become aware.,
