Props and Costumes

When you go to the theatre you expect to see things that are out of the ordinary. Choreographers create a kind of magic with lights, music, costumes, props, and any visual element that can create an illusion or a special effect.

After a dance is created, a choreographer might want to decorate the stage with objects, which help set the mood of the piece. Adding color or textures to the scene can make the dance more interesting. Smoke or fog can make the stage look mysterious. Lighting can make the stage more dramatic.

Sometimes a choreographer will want the dancers to wear a
particular costume or a mask. Sometimes performers will dance with props such as balls, sticks, scarves, elastics, boxes, chairs, or things that can make designs or help accentuate the movement.

It is fun to experiment with props and costumes. Dancers may pick up an object or put on a costume and think, " How does this make me want to move?"  You just have to use you imagination and explore the possibilities.

Lighting helps make
magic on stage.
