You Can Call Him Rembrandt

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born in Holland on July 15, 1606.  He is known as one of the greatest painters in history.  When he was in his teens, he began to study art, and by the time he was 22 he already had students of his own!

Rembrandt created hundreds of paintings, drawings and etchings (a drawing cut into a metal plate and then stamped onto paper).  He was specially good at making pictures of people.  Sometimes these were large crowds of people, or sometimes a portrait (a picture of a person).  He paid close attention to details, and would sometimes have people wear costumes which he painted very carefully.

Rembrandt even used himself as a model in almost 60 "self-portraits."  He used his own face to experiment with different expressions … angry, surprised, happy.

Rembrandt drew this

in 1639.
