AOD-Collaborative Therapies Professional Discussion List
This list justifies its existence by purporting to be a forum for the
discussion of collaborative approaches to alcohol & other drug problems
(or, if you like, AOD = "Alcohol and Other Dependencies"). Online since
Nov 4 1997; (no traffic since 8-3-00).

- How To
Subscribe to aod-collab:
Send a message to
majordomo@xmission.com with the following content in the message body:
subscribe aod-collab
end
Note: Please do not add your name to the phrase "subscribe
aod-collab" ; the remailer here is majordomo not listserv, and requires
the given format (it interprets Your_Name in that position as a bad
address, and chokes on it).
Soon after you send your subscription-request, you should receive a
message from majordomo@xmission.com, giving you instructions to confirm
your subscription (by sending a reply that contains a special command).
Please reply as directed. Once you have done so, you should receive a
"welcome to the list" type message. (Using this request-confirmation
process prevents persons from subscribing others to lists, and reduces the
risk of list-addresses being collected for junk-email purposes).
- How To Stop getting email from
aod-collab:
From the email address that you used to subscribe to aod-collab, send an
email message to
majordomo@xmission.com--not to the list--with the following
content in the message body:
unsubscribe aod-collab
end
- If you experience difficulty subscribing to the list, or
unsubscribing, please inform the listowner (i.e., janitor) via
owner-aod-collab@xmission.com. Please give as much information as
possible regarding the nature or sequence of the trouble, and the desired
outcome.
-
Due to lack of skill on the listowner's part, digest-format and list
archives are not available online. If you want a copy of all previous
messages, subscribe to the list, then send the listowner an email
requesting the previous messages. He'll then send you,
absolutely free, an ascii file containing "all-messages-so-far".
Charter (v1.1) of the AOD-Collaborative Therapies
List
Name: aod-collab@xmission.com
Purpose:
This is a forum for treatment professionals to discuss the
practical application of cooperative/ collaborative approaches to
substance use problems and other "addictions" [1].
Common features of these approaches include, to a greater or lesser
degree:
- utilization of clients' existing resources and motivations;
- use of a cooperative/collaborative stance in negotiating treatment
goals and tasks; and
- the presumption that individuals are able to make significant,
lasting changes in substance use patterns.
Commonly-used labels for some of these approaches include
narrative, solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral,
motivational-enhancement, reality-therapy, strategic, & Ericksonian
therapies. Discussion of other approaches, consistent with these common
features, is welcomed.
[1] It seems useful to view behavior patterns such as
"sexual addiction", "compulsive gambling", "stress eating" as having
behaviors, feelings and cognitions in common with patterns of problematic
substance use. As such, discussion regarding treatment of these
difficulties fits within the scope of this list. Hopefully, the
similarities will extend to commonalities among effective treatments as
well.
[ For an interesting perspective on the term "addiction", see the
following talk on
addiction by Bonni Ross, from her site DHARMA IN VANCOUVER - R.E. ]
On-topic discussions might include
- questions and answers regarding application of these treatment
approaches in various settings, including MH & dual-dx clients
- case consultations (be sure to omit or distort information which could
be used by others to identify particular clients)
- clarifying similarities and/or differences between views of these
approaches
- discussing strategies for working effectively with staff and clients
who are strongly committed to a disease-model orientation
- sharing information about workshops and other sources of useful ideas
related to the above topics
Anti-purpose:
This is not intended to be a forum for
- debates re: the validity of the philosophical foundations of these or
other approaches;
- arguing the existence or non-existence of "addiction", "disease",
"therapy", "mental illness", etc. etc...
- discussions of how to properly apply "traditional" treatment of
substance abuse (Minnesota model; 12-step based treatments)
- AA advocacy or AA bashing
- giving or receiving advice on how to deal with one's own
(relative's, co-worker's, friend's) substance use difficulties
- frequent or long messages promoting something you are selling
Moderation Style: Moderate.
aod-collab has been set up as an unmoderated list (meaning
that posts do not have to be individually approved by a moderator). The
list-owner will intervene with list discussions only as necessary to keep
this a place for professional discussion of treatment issues (i.e., as
little as possible).
The list-owner will comment privately or to the list as needed if
there are persistent threads or repeated postings that are WAY off-topic.
Incivility, personal attacks, and posting blatant flame-bait will also be
strongly discouraged.
Spam-prevention measures are in place to keep out unsolicited
commercial email, and to reduce risk of subscriber address-harvesting by
spammers. It may become necessary to set up auto-moderation of posts to
more thoroughly accomplish these objectives; if this occurs, an
announcement will be made on the list.
Posting guidelines:
- Please post messages with a descriptive
Subject:
heading. Retain the Subject:
re: oldtopic
, if your message is continuing the currently
identified thread, or select a new Subject:
heading
if the current discussion (or response) has drifted significantly from the
original.
- When replying to other posts, please quote or include only as
much of the previous article as is necessary to establish context of
your statements. Modern mailreaders have the facility for easily
trimming extra information.
- Please use only ascii text in aod-collab messages. My
paranoid voices inform me that poisoned-URL's will soon join the
growing list of unpleasant surprises spread via MS-based malware
vectors.
- If you use a .sig file, please use one of 4 lines or less on
this message base, to help preserve mailspace for all.
- Feel free to share pointers to workshops and other commercial or
non-commercial sources of information and ideas, including your own. If
you have created or published something you think would be useful to
other list participants, mention it in the context of relevant
discussions.
- Persons who want to publicize a therapy- or substance-abuse
-related product, not directly related to a current discussion thread,
may post a _brief_ monthly message giving a website URL, or requesting
inquiries via private email. On the other hand, you can accomplish the
same thing within the confines of a 4-line signature block, every time
you post.
- By contributing messages to the mailing list, each listmember
shares their ideas. Every message, though widely distributed,
remains the intellectual property of its author (excepting any material
quoted from others). Participants are encouraged to obtain
permission from the respective authors before quoting posted material for
non-list-related purposes (classes, workshops, articles, etc.).
Participants are also asked to refrain from posting copyrighted articles
from journals, etc. unless permission has been granted from the publisher
to do so. Often, one can refer others to the source via citation or URL.
Listowner address: owner-aod-collab@xmission.com
Please use this address for problems with subscribing,
unsubscribing, or comments/questions about the list. If for some reason
you don't receive any action or reply from the listowner within three days
of a request you make, please send a message to
nospam@solution-consulting.com
