The original Book of Commandments manuscript
book has recently been rediscovered in the office of the First Presidency of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah. It is
known by the title Book of Commandments and Revelations. Pages 116 and 121 are
from this manuscript.
Four leaves (eight pages) were preserved separately: pages 111-112, 117-120; 139-140.
Pages 139-140 were copied after 1831. These eight pages are owned by the Community of Christ, Independence, Missouri.
Photographs and typescripts of these pages are in H. Michael Marquardt, Joseph Smith Revelations:
Text and Commentary Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1999), 350-365.
The following typescript does not contain
all the handwritten corrections, punctuation marks and verses that were made in
preparation for the publication in A Book of Commandments. Words added
above the line are indicated by angle brackets < >. Footnotes are given for important variants in
the text.
The following pages contain the complete
text of four revelations, portions of two other revelations and the testimony
to the Book of Commandments.

Christ that we are permitted to have this privilege of bearing this testimony

of Heaven or as the sand upon the sea shore & heard the voice of the Lord
saying these all shall bow the knee & every tongue shall confess to him who
sitteth upon the throne forever & ever for they shall be judged according
to their works & every man shall receive according to his own works &
his own dominion in the mansions which are prepared & they shall be
servants of the most high but where God & Christ dwells they cannot come
worlds without end this is the end of the vision which we <saw which we>
were commanded to write while we were yet in the Spirit But great &
marvelous are the works of the Lord & the mysteries of his kingdom which he
shewed unto us which surpaseth all understanding in glory & in might &
in dominion which he commanded us that we should not write while we were
yet in the Spirit & are not Lawful for men to utter neither is man capable
to make them known for they are only to be seen & understood by the power
of the holy Gohost which God bestows on those who love him & purify themselves
before him to whom he grants this privilege of seeing & knowing for
themselves that through the power & manifestation of the Spirit while in
the flesh they may be able to bear his presence in the world of glory & to
God & the Lamb be glory & honor & dominion forever & ever amen

Jesse Gause <F G Williams>[6] Hiram Portage # March 15. 1832 # Co. Ohio
Verily
<verily> I say unto you my servant Jesse <Frederick G
Williams>[7] listen to the voice of him who speaketh, to the word
of the Lord your God, & hearken to the calling wherewith you are called,
even to be a high Priest in my Church[8] & counsellor unto my Servant Joseph, unto whom I
have given the keys of the Kingdom which belongs always to the
presidency of the high Priest Hood, therefore verily I acknowledge him &
will bless him, & also thee, in as much as thou art faithful in Counsel, in
the office which I have appointed unto you, & in prayer always vocally
& in thy heart in publick & in private also in thy ministry, in proclaiming
the gospel in the Land of the Living & among thy brethren
and in doing these things thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings, & will
promote the g<lo>lory of him who is your Lord. wherefore be faithful,
stand in the office I have appointed you succor the weak, lift up the hands
which hang down, & strengthen the feeble knees; & if thou art faithful
unto the end thou shalt have a crown of immortality & eternal life in the
mansion which I have prepared in the house of my father behold & lo these
are the words of Alpha & Omega even Jesus Christ Amen
[1] The unfinished Book
of Commandments ends at this point on page 160. The remainder of the text
of this document continues beyond the Book of Commandments printing.
[2] The words
"pertaining to Zion" were added to the manuscript and probably not
part of the original reading.
[3] The words
"& prophets" were added to the text. The Book of Commandments
manuscript page is in the handwriting of John Whitmer. In an earlier manuscript
of this revelation written by Whitmer these words are not in the text. Whitmer
recorded this document in Book B.
[4] The words
"hewn from" were originally written on the manuscript of the Book
of Commandments. When this revelation was published in The Evening and
the Morning Star in the September 1832 issue it was printed as such. For
ten months the text remained the same.
[5]
Note: The testimony was copied evidently from the original by John Whitmer. The
names of Sidney Rigdon, Orson Hyde, Wm. E. McLellin, Luke Johnson and Lyman Johnson
in the right column are in Whitmer's hand and shows that this document is a
copy. Those names with an "[s]" before the name indicates that these
individuals signed the document after John Whitmer made his copy. Reynolds
Cahoon would have signed his name in November 1831 while most of the other
signatures would have been signed while the individuals were in Missiouri as
early as 1832. It should be noted that there are no names of members of the
Whitmer family contained in this testimony. This could indicate either the
names were omitted when copied or that none of the Whitmer family testified to
the revelations of Joseph Smith.
[6] This revelatory
document was for Jesse Gause. Gause had been ordained a counselor to Joseph
Smith in the Presidency of the High Priesthood of the Church of Christ on March
8, 1832. The index to the Kirtland Revelations Book has "Revelation to
Jesse Gauze March 15 1832."
[7] Both the Book of
Commandments manuscript and the Kirtland Revelations Book (p. 17) have the name
of Jesse crossed out and "Frederick G Williams" added above the line.
[8] Jesse Gause was
ordained as a High Priest probably at the same time he became a counselor to
Joseph Smith on March 8, 1832 while Frederick G. Williams received his
ordination as High Priest months earlier on October 25, 1831.
