February 1999 GRAND CANYON NUDE RAFT TRIP - JUNE 6 - 19, 1999 The Utah Naturists and Arizona Wildflowers are happy to announce this once-in-a-lifetime, 14-day rafting trip for nudists through Arizona's spectacularly beautiful Grand Canyon departing from Las Vegas, Nevada, June 6, 1999. BACKGROUND: This is a charter trip being offered to the nudist community and those who share their philosophy and desire for outdoor nude adventures. It will be a leisurely- paced 14-day adventure on the bigger, safer, motorized boats and will run the entire length of the Grand Canyon - the grandest canyon of them all. WEATHER: Early June is the least rainy season and the temperatures will be below the peaks of July. The high daytime temperatures will contrast nicely with the 50-60 degree temperature of the river. ITINERARY: This round-trip from Las Vegas will be as follows: Ride by bus from Las Vegas to the Boulder City airport and fly by light plane to a spot near the Lee's Ferry, AZ, launch site on Sunday morning, June 6th 1999. We will travel by rubber raft the entire 280 miles of the Grand Canyon with its 60 major and 120 minor rapids in 14 days, ending at Pierce's Ferry on upper Lake Mead. Each night we will camp on the shore of the river under the stars or in tents if the weather is threatening. From our take-out point we will ride by bus back to Las Vegas on Saturday, June 19th. You would travel from your home to Las Vegas on Saturday, June 5th and return home 15 days later on Sunday, June 20, 1999. If you drive to Las Vegas, you may leave your car at the Boulder City airport where parking is free. EXPERIENCE: Our outfitter, Ted Hatch of Hatch River Expeditions, and his father before him, have been running the Grand Canyon commercially since 1934! The prices charged by all concessionaires are carefully reviewed and regulated by the National Park Service (NPS) to ensure a fair price for the services provided. Ted claims he will provide the best meals and best crews for this prime-season trip. We have no reason to doubt him because his company has taken many well-known celebrities and politicians through the Grand. If he wasn't doing it right he wouldn't still be in business. His crew will tailor the on-shore activities as we desire, be it sight seeing, hiking, exploring, or just playing or relaxing in camp. RUBBER BOATS: Grand Canyon has some wild whitewater and BIG rapids. Therefore, we will be using the big rubber rafts so we are unlikely to get dumped in the cold river. These are oblong doughnut-shaped boats with an extra tube strapped to each side. Overall they measure 35 ft. long by 14 ft. wide. Ted says they have never flipped one. At this size they can carry many more provisions (like ice) than the 18-ft. rafts normally used for this length trip. Since they are motorized, we will quickly cover our average 20 miles per day. Thus, we will have more time to explore the shore, clear-water side canyons, and Indian ruins; and to enjoy the sunshine or shade as we wish. Other motorized trips hustle through the canyon on a whirlwind schedule that leaves little to experience besides the rapids and some hikes at the few places they do stop. Two weeks is a longer than usual trip through the Grand, but we felt it worth the time because of the trouble and expense to get there. So, we plan to stay as long as we can and really experience the delightful Grand Canyon. TRIP FARE: The trip fare is $2970 per person. It includes bus & light plane transportation from Las Vegas to our launch site; the raft trip itself which includes meals (lunch first day through lunch last day) and drinks (water, lemonade, juice, coffee, tea, & cocoa) while on the river, boats, boatmen, life jackets, and a bus ride back to Las Vegas; and the $10 NPS fee to enter Grand Canyon National Park. The trip is limited to a maximum of 36 passengers. Not included in the trip fare are your personal drinks (pop, beer, or liquor), a gratuity for the boatmen, round-trip transportation from your home to Las Vegas, meals & hotel in Las Vegas, camping gear, film, sunscreen, and optional slot- machine fodder. A limited selection of pop & beer may be purchased near Lee's Ferry on the morning of our departure. A sleeping bag, pillow, air mattress, and ground cloth set may be rented for $35 for the trip. You will need a light rain coat or rain suit to wear under your life jacket to stay warm when splashed by the cold water in the rapids. A throw-away rain coat will be available for $10 at the launch site. NUDITY: We have verified that nonconfrontational nudity is acceptable to Ted's crew and the NPS ranger in charge of river rafting. Depending on the attitude of other groups we may meet - and many are tolerant of nudity in this setting - we may not need to briefly don shorts or a towel when we encounter other groups. We should remind you however, that even though this is a nude trip you are required to wear one of the supplied life jackets at all times while on the river. It would also be prudent to wear foot gear while on the rafts. It would also be prudent to wear foot gear at all times. The rapids may also make it necessary to wear rain gear to keep warm. Otherwise, nudity on shore will be fine. RESERVATIONS: We have only a few available reservations left for this trip.
