Episode Three
Scene One: Still on the street by the stunned Kilaak
Doctor: It appears I shall require your assistance further. The Daleks have my friend and your wife and it appears that they are to be Robotized!
Pause
Eric: That's bad, right?
Doctor: Most certainly. The device allows the Daleks to control the individual it's implanted upon. It overrides their free will, destroys the personality.
Eric: (slight hint of nervousness creeping into his voice) But, we can remove it. It comes off. (Brief pause) Right?
The Doctor reexamines the device on the Kilaak's neck during his next speech.
Doctor: The device is implanted into the spine. Removal would likely be impossible before the brain is burned out by the device's override. (His focus becomes distant as he reminisces.) I remember grown men walking into rivers to drown as their synapses fried. Horrible.
Eric: (now officially worried) Well, what are we doing sitting here then? Shouldn't we be doing something to rescue them?
The Doctor bounds to his feet and pats Eric on the shoulder.
Doctor: That's exactly what we're going to do. (Half turns) Aren't we K-9?
K-9: Affirmative, Master.
Doctor: (smiles his wide smile) See? Nothing to worry about.
Steve giggles.
Scene Two: The Street outside the Dalek Spacecraft.
The Dalek shuttle eats up a good piece of the street width-wise. It is smaller than the Kilaak craft but larger than, say, a NASA space shuttle. It 'hid' within the RADAR image of the Kilaak craft in an effort to land undetected.
The three Kilaak bring Katy and Romana to the Dalek at the foot of the ramp that leads to the Dalek ship. Neither is eager to approach the Dalek so there is some pushing. Romana maintains her cool, calm demeanor. Katy is visibly nervous.
Dalek: RE-PORT!
Kilaak: (voice dragging slightly due to brain damage from long-term Robotization) These humans have been captured for Robotization.
The Dalek gives them a quick look over.
Dalek: PLACE THEM IN CELL FOUR.
Kilaak: I obey.
Katy and Romana are pushed up the ramp into the ship. Another Dalek, coloured gray like the first, approaches the first Dalek.
Dalek 2: KIL-AAK CON-TROL RE-PORTS THAT THE CRE-A-TURES ARE RE-SPON-DING TO THEIR CALL.
Dalek: IS THE CON-TROL DE-VICE FUNC-TION-ING AS EX-PEC-TED?
Dalek 2: YES.
Dalek: EX-CELL-ENT. PRE-PARE FOR PHASE SIG-MA. (Dalek rolls towards camera so that by the end of the next line the focus of the camera is on the upper dome of the Dalek and, more specifically, the eye stalk.) THE DES-TRUCT-ION OF THE HU-MAN RACE A-PPROACH-ES!
Scene 3: Footage of Godzilla walking through Japanese countryside, occasionally screeching. This is stock footage from 'Terror of Mechagodzilla'.
Scene 4: Footage of Mothra flying. This is stock footage from 'Godzilla vs. Mothra' aka 'Godzilla vs. the Thing'.
Scene 5: Footage of Angillus walking through Japanese countryside. This is stock footage from 'Destroy All Monsters'.
Scene 6: Inside a cell on the Dalek spacecraft
The cell is small. There is enough room to pace, but only enough room to take three or four steps before needing to turn around. With the Doctor's long legs he could probably do it in two steps. The door to the cell slides into the wall when it is open. There is a small window in the door. The cell is otherwise featureless.
Katy is already sitting on the floor in the corner. Romana is given a shove into the room. She gives the shover a dirty look as the door closes.
Katy: What was that thing?
Romana: What thing? The vaguely Pepperpot shaped thing with the stalks that determined we should be imprisoned here?
Katy nods.
Romana: That was a Dalek.
Katy: (surprised) THAT was a Dalek?
Romana nods. Katy shivers.
Romana: What did you expect it to look like?
Katy: I'm not sure. I didn't really think too much about how Steve described them. (Slight pause) It wasn't so much what it looked like as much as how it felt to be near it. I could feel the hatred spilling off it in waves. It didn't know us but you could tell it despised us.
Romana: It doesn't know you but it does know me. (Frowns and pauses for thought) Or does it? Perhaps it doesn't. It may not even have scanned me as we went past. It certainly didn't seem to recognize me.
Romana gets visibly lost in her own thoughts. Katy is lost. Romana processes her thought and looks at Katy, not noticing her expression.
Romana: The question is: is it better for them to recognize me or not?
Katy: (still confused, desperately working to regain the current thread of conversation) How can they not recognize you if you've met before?
Romana: Well, we defeated the Daleks on their home planet of Skaro a little while ago, but if it's 2004, that hasn't happened yet. So, unless the Daleks have seen me before now, they might not know me now, but I may not have experienced that yet.
Katy's expression moves from confused to completely lost. Romana notices.
Romana: You haven't the faintest clue what I'm talking about, have you?
Katy: No I don't.
Romana: (moment of slight realization) Of course, your friend was the one that recognized us, not you. He didn't explain anything?
Katy: There really wasn't time.
Romana smiles at her word choice.
Scene 7: A small office belonging to the head of the local Prefecture
A small, flat panel widescreen TV is displaying the news with the sound turned off. The current activity on screen is a reporter speaking in the park with the Kilaak craft in the distance. Prefecture Head Kawata mops his large brow nervously. His primary assistance, Kanemura, is younger, calmer, taller and wears glasses.
Kawata: This is horrible. Horrible! Has the Prime Minister called with an update?
Kanemura: (clears his throat quietly) No Kawata-san.
Kawata: I'm not terrible surprised. I've seen this all happen before and I know what the outcome will be. The governments of Earth will not cave in under this pressure. They will fight back as promised. Humankind will likely triumph in the end. Whether humankind succeeds or not, one thing seems sure. Shiroishi is doomed. The people within her city limits are doomed. They just do not realize it as yet.
Scene 8: An Alleyway near the street with the Dalek ship in it.
The Doctor pokes his head around the corner of a building in order to look at the Dalek craft. Eric and Steve follow suit. While the mood is still quite serious this moment does look like something out of a Three Stooges movie due to Steve's demented expression and the Doctor's wide eyed stare.
Eric: (sounding less confident than he wants to be) So, we're breaking in there, getting your friend and my wife out of there and then we're... (Sighs) Okay, I have no clue how we're going to do this, but I guess we'll figure something out.
Steve: (momentarily lucid) Would they notice K-9 if we sent him in there?
Doctor: I rather think they might. There may not be many hiding places inside for him.
The Doctor glances around, sees K-9's position and lowers his voice conspiratorially.
Doctor: (whispering) Besides K-9 is a bit on the slow side. He wouldn't make it up the ramp quickly enough.
Despite the Doctor's efforts, K-9 hears this. His head and tail droop sadly.
K-9: I am unsatisfactory, Master. I failed to protect the Mistress. I am now unable to rescue the Mistress.
The Doctor drops to K-9's level.
Doctor: Unsatisfactory? Unsatisfactory? Nonsense K-9, you are completely satisfactory. Your level of satisfactory is not determined by your usefulness at this exact moment. At this exact moment, I'm not sure what would be the most useful. The sonic screwdriver would be able to open any locked door they would be behind but if we can't get the sonic screwdriver to the locked door, what good is it at this exact moment? Hmm?
K-9 perks up a little at this logic.
Doctor: The problem is getting inside that shuttle.
Scene 9: Back inside the cell on the shuttle
Katy is surprised again.
Katy: Can I go through it again?
Romana nods.
Katy: The blue box that appeared out of nowhere is called a TARDIS. It can go anywhere in Time and Space. You and the Doctor are both Time Lords from the planet Gallifrey. You are considered renegades because you choose to participate in the histories of other planets rather than observe the vow of non-interference that the majority of the Time Lords observe.
Romana: It sounds like you've got the gist of it.
Katy still looks stunned.
Katy: It's a lot to try to understand. I think I'm beginning to understand why Steve went a little loopy when he saw you arrive.
Romana: Now that you've mentioned your friend, do you think he's okay? He seemed a bit... odd.
Katy: He's always a bit odd, a friendly sort of odd, but odd. This is more odd than normal for him.
Katy suddenly frowns.
Katy: Shouldn't we be trying to figure out a way out of here?
Romana: Oh but we are. Concentrating on a problem like this is no good. By distracting ourselves in this manner we're allowing our subconscious minds to work on the problem.
Katy: Oh, okay.
Romana: (smiles energetically) Now then, you were saying something about how odd this Steve is?
Scene 10: Back in the alleyway
Steve sneezes.
Eric: Bless you.
Doctor: (grins) Someone must be talking about you old boy.
Eric: (surprised) What?
Doctor: Japanese custom notes that when you sneeze, people are talking about you.
Eric: I was aware of that. I was just a bit surprised that you knew that.
Doctor: (politely demanding) Why?
Eric: I dunno really. It's just not the sort of thing us gaijin are expected to know.
Doctor: (grinning even wider than before) I know quite a lot of things. I've been around you see. I remember when Commodore Perry first landed here. 'Doctor' he said, 'you know these people. What must I do to not offend?' And I said 'Matt old chap, just...'
Eric: (interrupting) You were in Japan before Perry?
The Doctor nods.
Eric: Perry who landed in Japan in 1853?
Doctor: The very same.
Eric: (brief pause) You don't look a hundred and fifty years old.
Doctor: I'm not.
Eric: Okay then.
Doctor: It's more like seven hundred and fifty something. (Grins) I tend to lose track.
Eric just stares at him. Steve mutters something to the effect of 'Daleks conquer and destroy' but he is ignored.
Scene 11: Godzilla continues to stomp through the Japanese countryside. This is stock footage from 'Godzilla vs. Gigan'.
Scene 12: Rodan flaps through the air, presumably also heading for the Kilaak signal. This is stock footage from 'Destroy All Monsters'.
Scene 13: Still in that alleyway
Doctor: Ah!
Steve: (cheerfully echoes) Ah!
Eric: Why 'Ah!'?
Doctor: We've been approaching this problem all wrong. We've been trying to work out a way into the Dalek shuttle when all we need to do is find a way to get the Daleks out of the shuttle.
Eric: So, how do we do that?
Doctor: (wets finger and holds it in the air in order to test the direction of the wind) We bait them.
Eric: With what?
Doctor: (cheerfully) Me!
Scene 14: At the foot of the Dalek shuttle
Assorted robotized Kilaak are bringing in their captives. A Dalek is at the foot of the ramp and another is at the top, just visible inside the craft.
Rather suddenly, the Doctor pops out of the alleyway, waving his arms.
Doctor: Hallo Daleks!
The Dalek at the foot of the ramp spins around to face him.
Dalek: TAR-GET IS I-DENT-I-FIED AS THE DOC-TOR. THE DOC-TOR IS AN EN-E-MY OF THE DALEKS!
The Dalek from the top of the ramp glides down to the side of the other.
Dalek 2: THE DOC-TOR MUST BE EX-TER-MIN-A-TED!
Together they glide towards the Doctor screaming 'PER-SUE! E-LIM-IN-ATE! EX-TER-MIN-ATE!' at him. The Doctor grins and, taking advantage of the uneven pavement, runs off.
The Daleks fire their gun sticks at him but are unable to aim properly due to the uneven pavement and the Doctor's erratic running pattern. They continue to chase him.
Scene 15: Inside the Dalek shuttlecraft control room
A lone Dalek is in the shuttle control room.
Dalek Voice: (over speaker) A-SSIST! A-SSIST! THE DOC-TOR IS HERE! PER-SUE! EX-TER-MIN-ATE!
Dalek: I O-BEY!
The Dalek in the control room glides away. We see it pass by the room where Katy and Romana are being held. Romana's face is in the window, watching it leave.
Scene 16: Inside the cell
Romana is fidgeting near the door with her sonic screwdriver. Katy is just fidgeting.
Katy: Are you sure that's the last Dalek on board?
Romana: Honestly? No. Shuttles like this normally hold three Daleks and that should be the third going to chase after the Doctor.
Katy blinks in surprise.
Katy: How do you know that?
Romana presses on her sonic screwdriver. It emits a high pitched whine.
Romana: I overheard their conversation.
Katy: You must have really good ears. I didn't hear anything.
Romana 'aah's, having figured out the correct setting on the screwdriver.
Romana: I do have very good ears. Thank you for mentioning it.
Romana turns to face Katy.
Romana: Remember now - follow my lead, try and keep the questions to a minimum and we've got a solid chance of getting out of here safe and sound. Right?
Katy nods. Romana presses on her sonic screwdriver again. The whine is a slightly different pitch than before. The door slides open. Katy smiles.
Katy: I'm so glad you remembered you had that.
Romana: I'm glad I remembered to get it working before I left the TARDIS today. Shall we?
Cautiously they leave the cell and creep into the hallway.
Scene 17: Another street in Shiroishi.
The Doctor is still running. He does not appear to be winded. The Daleks continue to chase him. There are now three Daleks behind him. They fire their gunsticks at him. The shots aren't even close. The Doctor pauses for a moment next to a sign attached to a ramen restaurant.
Doctor: (taunting) Oh come on! Is that the best you can do?
A Dalek blast makes a hole in the sign next to him. The Doctor's smile disappears.
Doctor: I guess they can do a bit better.
The Doctor starts running again.
Scene 18: Dalek shuttle control room
Romana and Katy enter. Katy, understandably enough, is still very nervous.
Katy: I thought we were trying to leave.
Romana: (while approaching the main control panel) We are, but if we have an opportunity to find out why the Daleks are here in the first place, shouldn't we take it?
Katy: I guess so.
Romana: (peering at the controls) Afterall, if we know why they're here, it'll be easier to foil their plan, won't it?
Katy: I must admit I like that idea. (Brief pause) You can read their language?
Romana: (a bit sheepishly) Only a little.
Romana manages to activate the screen. Weird Skaroian characters flow across the screen. Romana continues to manipulate the weird Dalek controls (she's spinning a concealed device that a Dalek would manipulate with its sucker arm). It looks like she knows what she's doing.
Scene 19: The Park where the Kilaak landed
The Park is still a mass of patient, curious humanity, the media and assorted police and military personnel. The Kilaak leader approaches the podium again. The crowd quiets in anticipation.
Kilaak Leader: (in a monotone) People of Earth. Your governments have but one hour left to respond to our demands. Already mighty creatures are responding to our call. In one hour we discover if they appear as the harbingers of destruction or to celebrate the beginning of Kilaak rule over this planet.
Scene 20: The alleyway near the Dalek ship
Steve and K-9 are still in the alleyway.
Steve: (his voice deep, attempting to mimic the Doctor's serious tone) K-9?
K-9: Master?
Steve: We are in trouble, aren't we?
K-9: (if a robot dog can sigh patiently, K-9 does) Yes Master.
Scene 21: Dalek Shuttle Control Room
Romana is still at the controls. Katy is listening for movement in the hallway.
Katy: (hissed whisper) Romana, hurry! Someone's coming.
Romana: (also quietly) Nearly there I think. I'm starting to get the hang of this now.
The door to the control room slides open. Katy raises her hand to strike, but pulls away when she sees it is Eric.
Katy: Eric!
Eric visibly relaxes.
Eric: Here you guys are. I was getting worried that they'd already worked on you two.
Katy and Eric hug, stating their next few lines of dialogue whilst they do so.
Katy: They never got that far. We're okay.
Eric: Thank goodness. We've got to hurry. The Doctor is leading the Daleks on a wild goose chase to give you an opportunity to escape.
Katy: Actually running from them?
Eric nods.
Katy: Oh my gosh. That's crazy.
Eric: Definitely. We should go.
Romana reads something that stuns her.
Romana: I never thought it possible...
Romana shakes it off and returns the screen to the way it was when they arrived. She returns her attention to Katy and Eric who are just finishing their hug.
Romana: We should go. I have to talk to the Doctor. We are all in grave danger.
Romana exits the control room in a hurry. As he and Katy go to follow, Eric shrugs his shoulders.
Eric: You know, after being in danger for awhile, grave danger doesn't feel all that different from the rest.
Scene 22: Another street in Shiroishi
The three Daleks are milling about the street. The Doctor is nowhere to be seen.
Dalek: THE DOC-TOR HAS ES-CAPED.
Dalek 2: THE DOC-TOR IS AN EN-E-MY OF THE DA-LEKS.
Dalek 3: THE DOC-TOR WILL IN-TER-FERE WITH OUR PLANS.
Dalek: WHEN HE IN-TER0FERES HE WILL BE LO-CA-TED AND EX-TER-MIN-A-TED!
The Daleks chorus as one.
Daleks: EX-TER-MIN-ATE THE DOC-TOR! EX-TER-MIN-ATE THE DOC-TOR!
They glide away.
Scene 23: The alleyway
K-9 is still keeping his sensors on Steve. They are joined by Romana, Katy and Eric. Romana looks concerned. Katy and Eric look relieved to be 'safe' and that Steve is unharmed. K-9 rotates his 'ears'.
Romana: K-9!
K-9: Mistress?
Romana: Where's the Doctor?
K-9: Eluding Dalek pursuit Mistress.
Steve grins warmly at everyone.
Steve: (cheerfully) Hullo!
Romana: (patiently) Hello. (Returning her attention to K-9) Did he have a specific plan this time?
K-9: No Mistress.
Romana: (downbeat) I'm not surprised.
The Doctor bounds into the alleyway, grinning.
Doctor: Did anyone miss me? Apart from the Daleks of course.
There is a general chorus of greeting from the group.
Romana: I'm glad you're safe Doctor. I've seen the Daleks' plans.
Doctor: (still cheerful) Excellent. What are those motorized dustbins up to this time?
Romana: They've traveled through something called a Time Corridor to get here.
Doctor: (pondering) Time Corridor, that's new.
Romana: They are here to weaken humanity. They are planning to use the giant monsters to rampage over the planet.
Doctor: (stunned, his voice gets low and serious as he thinks aloud) If these Daleks have traveled through time to get here, they may be aware of the failed Dalek attack in the next century.
Romana: (also thinking aloud) But if they're aware of that failed attack, they may be looking to alter those events.
Doctor: Which would damage the Space/Time Continuum! Time doesn't like to be changed.
The Doctor spins to face Katy, Eric and Steve.
Doctor: If the Daleks are allowed to maintain their control over these giant monsters, they might not only destroy this planet, but all of Time!
