Avengers, The (ITV)

Series One - 1961

Episodes marked with an '*' were apparently broadcast live and were never recorded, making them impossible to recover. Another Avengers note: Emma Peel was originally played by Elizabeth Shepherd. One episode featuring her was completed as well as parts of two more before it was mutually decided that she was not working out in the role. As far as I know, the footage with her as Peel does still exist, but I won't swear to that.

In September 2002 the first twenty minutes of the pilot episode 'Hot Snow' was located in the online version of the UCLA archive database. Within days a longer version of the promo film 'The Strange Case of the Missing Corpse' was located in the same database. The newly found version of the film clocks in at ten minutes compared to the previous version which only ran three minutes.

'Girl on a Trapeze' has been screened at a British television event. I hope this indicates it has been returned to the license holder.

Rumours hint that the Ian Hendry episodes may see Region 1 DVD release in 2004.

Canal+Image is now stating they were mistaken in noting they held the Elizabeth Shepard footage. 'The Town of No Return' and 'The Murder Market' were apparently recorded with this actress playing Mrs. Peel.

Early in 2001 'Girl on a Trapeze' was located online by an episode hunter who happened onto the fact that the episode was listed as being held in the UCLA film and tv archives database! Puttering on the Web has never been better spent. This brings new hope for Avengers fans as this was one of the episodes that was previously thought to have not been recorded and it doubles the number of existing Ian Hendry episodes.
