By all accounts, it was a Doctor Who fan that first brought the junkings to light and lead to their end. Audio copies exist for all missing episodes, taped by fans from their televisions in the sixties. In some cases these recordings are superior to the soundtracks on the film prints, a copy of 'The Tenth Planet' episode two exists with the film print married to one of these fan recordings. These audio tracks are also used to 'reconstruct' missing episodes using photographs, 'telesnaps', and other various items to give a feel for the episode whilst the soundtrack plays. Clips exist from various episodes, one from 'Four Hundred Dawns' runs for about six minutes, which is about a third of the episode. It is probable that 'The Feast of Steven', a Christmas themed episode, was never telerecorded.

In January 2004 a former BBC Engineer returned a copy of the second episode of 'The Dalek Masterplan' storyline - 'Day of Armageddon' bringing the number of missing episodes down to 108. He also returned a copy of the fifth episode of the first Dalek storyline but this episode had never gone missing from the BBC archives. Years ago the Engineer (Francis Watson) was asked to clean a room, found copies of the episodes, and kept them rather than throw them away.
