Some basic information about fake blood and scar techniques. There are several ways to do gore effects. I recommend my DVD called, "Simple Special Effects." This shows some of the very basic and effect blood and scar effects including some simple latex appliances. Blood effects can be basically divided into three main material groups; Fake blood, Gelatin effects, and Other. Stage or stunt blood is made from a special red pigment called FD&C Red #40 AL. This pigment will usually not stain permanently on most objects like homemade blood. You can not buy this pigment at any store. It comes in several forms such as liquid, paste, light and dark. You get more information with each product listed below. Should you make your own stage blood? Home made blood works just fine under certain conditions, 1. made and used right away so that it doesn't grow bacteria. 2. Is used only on non-porous objects so that it can be cleaned up. 3. Insects, especially ants, will not be a problem. (It is food!) Most internet formulas are horrible and will either stain fabrics, rot or poision the user. It only takes a few hours for bacteria to grow on a hot day. This will make your actors sick, often with the rocky mountain quickstep. We do not sell, nor give away our blood formulas. (duh!) Gelatin effects are made with gelatin. This is the same kind of gelatin that is used to make Jell-O, but it is industrial quality. You simply heat this stuff until it melts and apply with a stick or spatula. It can't be sculpted very well because it is so sticky. Other blood effects are things like waxes, collodian, latex, blood caps and the like. Each product will have it's own virtues and vices. Collodian will create "old" scars, but is difficult to see and only works on "fatty" skin such as the cheeks. Latex works best if made into a simple appliance, but looks fake. Wax works very well but it delicate. It will get smashed or fall off. 3-D makeup works get, but is expensive and time consuming. There are many books and old VHS tapes that cover this subject. A good starting kit would contains the following: Stage or stunt blood (they are the same) Blood paste such as BN fresh scab Nose or scar wax. A gelatin kit. A bruise wheel, or cream makeup in the following colors: Dark Yellow Popsicle sticksBlood red Deep purple Black Tongue depressor Sculpting tool Collodian Stipple sponge Foam latex makeup wedges Stuff for clean up such as removers, soap, paper towels, etc. Please don't make this too complicated. This is supposed to be fun, remember? A skilled artist can do a lot with a few simple colors and tools. Simple always looks better on film. Always test and experiment before you get on set. Sometimes we become infatuated with our own work and forget that thousands of others will unimpressed with our "dumb looking effects." If people wince when they see it, the audience will love it. Gelatin Blood Capsules Description BN-GB0: Complete Blood Pack. Fill these gelatin capsules with Stage Blood several hours before use. Bite into capsules, and let the blood flow. Description BN-GB1 and BN-GB2: Gelatin Blood Capsules. Open capsule, and fill one half full with blood. Capsules hold their shape even if not used for several days. Place in mouth and bite down to release blood.
