Breakaway Glass and Bottle Material
There
are several makers of "Breakaway" glass items. The first thing you
notice is the high cost. $30 for a single wiskey bottle is not
uncommon. You may want to do this yourself and save money, or you may
want to do it for the fun. Personally, if I were making a movie and
needed pieces that looked good, I'd buy them. The problem with making
them yourself is the time involved and it's sometimes difficult to get
good bottles.
There is some good advise on making panes of
glass. Google something like "breakaway glass harvard" and see what
comes up. Getting good glass is very tricky and if you can put it off
you have my admiration. Usually the glass is about 1/4" thick and you
are limited to panes that about 36" square. Really large sheets of
glass you see in stunts are tempered glass detonated with a "glass
breaker." In the past I've "detonated" tempered glass with an old file
and a hammer. You only need to wack the edge.
Bottles require a
silicone mold. Get the most heat resistant silicone you can find. The
stuff we sell just doesn't go hot enough. The Bottle Blend we carry is
half picolastic and half picotex. This is the old Hollywood formula.
Often, if you don't pour it just right you will get tiny bubbles that
fog the glass. I don't know how to get rid of these.
This
material is difficult for us to get and sometimes we run out. If you
have had some success with another brand, please let us know and we'll
see if we can pick it up.

Breakaway Bottle Blend
Traditional bottle and glass casting material used in Hollywood for
many years. 7oz will make a large whiskey bottle but more is needed for
control during the pour. Melt in a covered saucepan. Not the same as
"sugar glass" (not edible, won't melt, won't attract ants.).
