"My Honey," By Bessie Pease Gutmann
Comment: "My Honey," shows that, unlike many of her contemporaries, Gutmann did not depict ethnic groups as stereotypes or caricatures. Her husband Hellmuth, ever savvy about marketing trends, determined that a subject like "My Honey" was needed on the marketplace. This image was among the first non-caricatures of an African-American subject. Gutmann created it with charcoal and color shadings, and the image was published as a print in 1926
