The Black Mountains
Author: Fred Saberhagen
Year: 1971
Abstract:
Rolf, Thomas, Chup and Charmian are back and this time they are taking on the citadel of Som the Dead himself. Well,
not all of them I suppose since Chup and Charmian are still firmly in the service of the East. New techology, demons,
and a lot of court intrigue. Can they overthrow Som?

tyranist's Review
I've always thought of this series as it revolves around our favourite peasant boy, but I noticed in The Black
Moutains that there is much more. Not just that the point of view character switches every other chapter (and
sometimes more often), but that as important as Rolf is, he is really only central because we know him from the first
book. An interesting technique.
This book continues the fantastic story begun in The Broken Lands but it also surpasses it in that we are now
familiar enough with the world that a bigger story could be told. I like that Saberhagen did away with most of the
establishing expositional material and just told us a better story. It makes the series more enjoyable. Can't wait
to read the third one now.
