Spectre's Review
By far the best military sci-fi book for ground-pounder action I've yet to
read. About the only thing in this book that I have to complain about is
that the epilogue didn't quite cover enough ground. However, I have a
feeling the othter books will build off of this one.
The pace of the book was very much like what I imagine typical military affairs to be like. A lot of waiting, with bits of intense action filling some of the gaps. Even during the portions of the book that were considered in the waiting category, it was filled with fascinating information and was rather enjoyable.
The literary quality of the book was excellently rounded. Good dialog sequences, tense battle sequences, and no meaningless sex or gore. This is a very clean book, and I highly recommend the whole lot.
4 rockets for exploration/quest because the troopers have to find the enemy, and Doug Weintraub is on a quest to save his planet. 10 rockets for military/fighting because that's what the book was about, and there's a lot of it. 7 rocketes for advanced technology, because not only did they tell you about new technologies, but loopholes and workarounds were also discussed. 5 rockets on the science for some actual scientific stuff discussed. Quite interesting. 1 rocket on the beasties because of the brief discussions of local fauna.
I'm sad Rick Shelley died. There just isn't enough quality workmanship out there, and he really added a great benefit to the military sci-fi world. He will be sorely missed.
