Colonel
Author: Rick Shelley
Year: 2000
Abstract:
This one's just a little bit different. Lon Nolan is back, a little older, and now
he's a colonel. We meet for the first time the New Spartans, folks similar to
the DMC, sans morals. Nolan is thrown through the grinder in this one. Oh,
and lots of people die.

Spectre's Review
Quite a bit more to this one. This is obviously the last in the series, and it
appeared there was actually a bit more thought put into this one than the
others. Through most of the series, I couldn't help wondering, "Hey, is
there another planet out there devoted to warfare?". Well, we meet them
here. The New Spartans. Who are just as good as DMC, only their
commanders seem to be willing to work for the highest bidder, where the
DMC seems to accept contracts that uphold their moral code.
We meet new technologies, and a few new people. I really enjoyed the examination of the internal workings of the upper echelon of a military unit. Quite fascinating. Also, we got to see a bit more of Q-space, and what happens inside. The qualiy of writing in this one seems to have been improved, the dialogue patterns and battle sequences seemed far more natural and interactive. The battle sequences were not rehashed like previous books, and the main plot was actually quite fascinating.
The only downside to this one was the epilogue that talked about some funky stuff. Not what I was expecting for an ending, but hey, it happens.

Minus one for that lame epilogue and this asteroid thing flying to another galaxy.
