First Flight

Author: Chris Claremont

Year: 1987

Abstract:
Lt. Nicole Shea screwed up in the flight simulator, supposedly killing everyone involved. Of course, it was a simulation. Little did she expect it would prove too close to the truth. On her first deep space assignment, crew die, pirates invade, and aliens come to say hello.

Spectre's Review
The pace of the book was fairly quick, most of the time. There were a couple areas that just seemed slow, and didn't do a lot to move the plot along. I was not impressed with the general literary quality of the book, it seemed to lack a bit of style in dialog, general plot, and general plot movement.

I like most of the characters, but there were a couple that were just so weak, it was lame. You'll find out when you read it. I enjoyed some of the interaction between a couple of the characters, but there was a bit of soap opera crap involved here and there.

The aliens were not too badly constructed, but some of the human/alien interaction was pretty lame. I guess it's hard to develop a good alien mindset.

The ending didn't really impress me. However, some of the action scenes leading up to the ending were quite well done (I guess my expectations for the ending were placed to high).

A definitely enjoyable read.

Spectre's Rating
Minus one for the ending. It just felt wrong. Minus one for a couple of weak characters. Minus one for the human/alien interaction.
