Abstract:
Wil Brierson, a 21st century cop, was close to finding the embezzler when the criminal put him in a 'bobble'. Inside of a bobble, time means nothing. And for Wil, 50 million years passed outside while he barely blinked his eyes. His wife, his child, his entire civilization, were taken from him. He is rescued from destruction by the Koralevs. People 200 years from Wil's time who have been travelling through millions of years to rescue the shreds of humanity that dot the system. Together, the last few hundred humans may be able to jump-start the human race. But then there's a murder, and a war, another murder, another war, and it looks like humanity's hopes will be destroyed. Can Wil find those responsible in time for humanity to have a fighting chance?

Spectre's Review
I like Vinge's writing style. Very few people can play around with time, and make the theories and events stick. Vinge did a great job of establishing the rules of his scientific universe, and obeying them. I enjoyed most of the characters, there were a couple instances where there were some inconsistencies, but all in all the charaters were well done. It's hard to predict what will happen in 100 million years. I thought it was quite mysterious how humanity disappeared some time in the 24th century. I would keep this book, and read it occasionally to get that strange twist on one-way time travel. It can be very effective, especially if you're running from someone you hope won't still be around in a few million years.
