The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Author: L. Frank Baum
Year: 1900
Abstract:
Young Dorothy is swept away to the land of Oz by a cyclone. OK. Forget it. If you don't know the story by now, then you
can't call yourself an American. Still there are some significant differences in the novel you will read and the movie that has
been crammed down our throats.

tyranist's Review
I read most of the Oz books when I was younger and profoundly enjoyed the world at the time. Recently, I had the opportunity
to introduce the world to my son. I have to say two things up front to those of you with doubting smirks. Firstly, any literature
worth a child or adolescent's time is worth mine. That is to say that I find great joy in reading and rereading the books and
novels of my youth. Now, it still has to be a proper novel for me to review it for you here, but just because the book store
tries to sell it in the corner doesn't mean that we will shirk away from it. On the contrary, literacy is literacy and you should
be able to find wonderful stories no matter where you look.
Secondly, even if you hated the movie, you should read the book. As we all know, books are so often better than their filmed
counterparts. This book, which I daresay few have read, but most know the story of, is no exception. The book is very different,
but the same in places. Give it a try.
As I started out saying, I have enjoyed this and the books that followed it for years. They center around a peculiar world that
is a pleasant and fantastic place to visit. I highly recommend this to fantasy fans and to those who are young at heart. Baum
has a talent for making even the horrific seem playful. The book is well-plotted and moves along nicely which is more than I
can say for a lot of contemporary fantasy.
