Virtual Reality Preview: Inside Out
by Andi Gladwin

Effect
The words "THIS WAY OUT" are written on a playing card and the card is folded in quarters with the text on the inside. With a simple rub, the card turns inside out so that the side of the card with writing on is now on the outside.

Method
Dribble the cards between your hands with the request that your spectator stops you in order to select a card. When they call stop, cut the cards and perform a double lift, leaving the card(s) face-up on top of the deck. Allow the spectator to write the words "THIS WAY OUT" on the face of the top card. You can either remove the card and necktie the deck, or leave it on top and have the card signed whilst you're holding it (my preferred method for walk around magic).

Once the card has been blessed with the spectator's writing, execute another double lift and push off the top card face-down onto the table immediately in front of your body. Turn the deck face-up as you comment, "It's rather obvious, but let me point out the difference between the faces of the cards [point to the face of the deck] and the backs of the cards [point to the tabled card]." Turn the deck back over, double undercut the top card to the face and as attention is focused on the tabled card, perform a Mercury Fold (or any other invisible card fold), palm the card and pocket the deck, leaving the card in right hand finger palm. Jason's Question: If holding the deck face up and perform a Mercury Fold, the card ends up folded back out. Am I missing something?

Pick up the tabled card (leaving it face-down) and without flashing its face, fold it in half and then in half again, creating a card folded in quarters with the back facing out. As soon as the card has been folded, place it in position for Spellbound and perform the move, making the signed card appear to turn inside out.

As you hand the spectator their signed card, place your hand into your pocket (as a gesture of relaxation) and allow the spectator to keep the card as a souvenir.

Notes
1) David Stone has an excellent one hand Mercury style card fold that you may like to check out. "Mercury One" can be found in his lecture notes, "Mietek." As does Cody Fisher, who published his "Sleeves Up Mercury" in the October 2000 issue of MUM and in his lecture notes, "Required Reading."

2) The original idea for the presentation came from David Acer's "This Side Up" from his book "Natural Selections Volume II."

Virtual Reality is available direct from A² Productions http://www.asquaredproductions.com) now for just $15 with free postage to the UK and USA. It contains seven real world effects that Andy uses virtually every day of his life!
