Nisbet's book is good. Some other things on Thompson to check out:

Northwest Journal did a lengthy biographical article in Volume V, and Volume
IX was pretty much given over to a detailed explanation of his navigational
methods, with particular interest in accuracy. Almost all of the information
about Thompson is also applicable to other explorers of this time, such as
Simon Fraser, Alexander Mackenzie, Lewis & Clark, Samuel Hearne, & Peter Fidler.
These back issues are still available--for more info, see the Northwest
Journal website at www.telusplanet.net/public/gottfred/nwj.html. The website
also has the introduction to Vol. IX posted, so you can get a better idea of
what is included.

I would also recommend the new editon of Thompson's journals:
Thompson, David. _Columbia Journals_. Barbara Belyea (ed.) McGill-Queen's :
Montreal, 1994. ISBN 0-7735-0989-5
This contains Thompson's journals for every one of his trips over the
Rockies and his descent down the Columbia & his return back. Just great,
well-researched, and the grapevine says it will be coming out in paperback
soon (I sure hope so, it deserves a wider audience). Includes many
reproductions of maps.
