Re: MtMan-List: log cabin

Bill,

I know it was a long time ago that you requested this info, but if you still
need it here is a couple of really good references that I have on log
cabins. The first is:

"Diary of an Early American Boy, Noah Blake 1805" by Eric Sloane, Ballantine
Books, New York, 1965, ISBN 0-345-32100-6

I believe that this book may be out of print because when I got it a few
years ago I had to special order it from Barnes & Noble and they said they
only had a few left. It is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone
doing research on our period. It describes what it was like to live on a
frontier farm, through the eyes of a 15 year old boy in the year 1805. The
recovered diary of Noah Blake (the 15 year old) is what was used as a source
to describe and make drawings of historically correct items and implements,
including the cabin they lived in and layout and growth of the farm from
1790 to 1805. It is very informative and interesting reading.

Another book that I got when in Tennessee back in 1994 is:

"The Log House in East Tennessee" by John Morgan, The University of
Tennessee Press, Knoxville, 1990, ISBN 0-87049-653-0

I got this book at the James White Fort in Knoxville and it has a lot of
pertinent info.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Jerry (Meriwether) Zaslow #1488
