Without Words:

The Language of Signs and Symbols

Humans have invented symbols as non-verbal indicators of complex ideas, beliefs, religions, and social movements. Early humans painted on cave walls symbolic representations of their world. Later, alphabets and numerical systems were developed to represent the sounds of spoken language and quantities of objects. However, all cultures assign their own meanings to symbols and those meanings are often as vastly different as the cultures themselves. These essays explore the meanings of sacred symbols and signs.
